Sabre-toothed Tiger
What you do is sail to Greenland from Northern Europe. You should pass
a Supply Port called Hekla. Go, from Iceland, up and left (diagonal) and
you should arrive at Greenland before you know it. The screen stops
scrolling so take a deep breath and sail to the supposed end of the earth
and appear on the other side.
Now on this side, follow the coast of Greenland and you will find Forel.
You can't miss it. Stop there and restock.
I will give you a hint here on getting the Sabre-toothed Tiger. Fight in a
battle against a merchant and get either a Carrack or a Nao (or just buy
one, but fights are fun). They hold large amounts of food and water, and
the crew is generally small. Assign your crew with approximately the
following numbers:
%70 on navigation
%30 on look out
(That's in the menu when you press X and move one to the left --) Assign Crew)
Have about 50 sailors on your ship. Now, if in a Nao, you can sail from
port about 34 days, and if Carrack, maybe 28.
From Forel, save the game and sail away from Europe, but still hugging
the coast of Greenland. Follow it all the way until you reach the top of
the world. When you reach the top of the world and you are still on the
continent of Greenland, and you do not find a village (to the far right of
bay), the village is not in your current game.
I will explain. There are 98 villages in the game altogether. However,
you can only find 50 each time through. So it is possible it is not in
your game, and the game selects them randomly.
If you do find a village there, excellent. Save the game and land at the
village. If you are low on food, Plunder before Entertaining the villagers.
If men are killed in the Plundering, leave the village and Load the game;
you cannot afford to lose crewmen. Raise the friendship, by Entertaining
the villagers, to about 60 and Search (it takes no food to Search, so do
it as much as you feel necessary). If you aren't suddenly attacked by a
monster, Entertain and Search again until you do get attacked. You will
lose some men, but hopefully, it won't be that bad. In this case, getting
attacked calls for celebration because it earns you 10 gold bars!
Leave the village, save the game, and dock at the village again. Plunder
food until you feel content (Plunder only so you don't lose men, if you
must, Load the game and Plunder again). Then dock at any place on the
continent and stock up on water. Save the game.
Woolly Mammoth
If you feel gutsy about it, you can get the Woolly Mammoth - another
10 gold bar find! From where the Sabre-toothed Tiger is, sail along the
top of the world to the left. Do not leave the coast because the islands
of Canada are the most confusing. Just ride the coast to the left, and
try not to drift downward. You will be forced to cross the line in the
game that separates ice and snow to frozen grass and trees (you know
how the land changes image in a straight horizontal line). Once you are
able to go back to the white, snow lands (and still hugging the coast),
and you can sail to the north so it stops scrolling up, you should find a
village. That is where the Woolly Mammoth is and you apply the same
rules you did when finding the Sabre-toothed tiger. It is a monster and
will kill some of your crew. But ten gold bars is worth it. If the village
is not there, simply load the game and head back to Forel.
After that fact, if you know where Coppertown is, sail to it. If not, sail
back to Forel if you can make it, or back to Sabre-toothed Tiger to
stock up on food again.
Here are the other 10 gold bar finds:
Moai
From Mollendo of South America (the southern-most Supply Port on
the Pacific side), save the game and sail straight to the left (no
turning or diagonals necessary in finding this island). Just keep going;
it's a long way. After about twenty to thirty seconds of sailing
(approximate... all ship's speeds are different) push Start and on the
map you should find an evident island. Upon arrival of the island, it is
all red and deserty except a little green square, if you find a village in
the little square (the only place it would be) dock there. If not, load
the game (unless you prefer to make a map). You must entertain 60
plus times like you did for the Mammoth or Tiger. The Moai is not a
monster, so it is a pleasant discovery.
Dodo
Sail around the tip of Africa (from Europe) and to the island of Madagascar.
From Sofala or Quelimane, just sail to the right. On the bottom right
corner, there is a tiny island. If a village appears, you have earned 10
more gold bars.
Giant Ground Sloth
This one is in the river of South America south of Rio de Janeiro (not the
Amazon). Just explore the river... it is at the very top end of the right
branch. It is a monster and will kill some of your crew. 10 gold bars!
Moa
Sounds like the Moai, as valuable as the Moai, but this is a bird from
New Zealand - not a statue from Easter Island. It is on the coast of
New Zealand. Just sail around until you find it. No tricks with this one.
It's a friendly bird, so you will not get attacked.
Remember, it is very possible that some of these are not in your present
game. That is one reason the replay on this game is so good.

Buy Balm to stop any storm that starts. You can buy Balm in select
item shops for 1000 gold. Some of the ports you can buy it are: Barcelona,
Beirut, Zeiton, Bordeaux. See if you can find others. Storms happen
mainly around Japan, West Africa, and the Gulf of Mexico. If traveling
around any of these areas, make sure you have Balm handy or your
journey (and life) could be cut short.

Money tips

When playing the beginning of this game, it's difficult to get enough
money to do anything. Here's what I always do and it works great.
Sail down and up the Nile River and stop at all of the villages you find
and search (you shouldn't have to entertain for these are low-rated
villages). Once you exit the Nile, stop at Alexandria and restock your
food and water. Then sail to either Lisbon or Bordeaux. In these two
ports are two different (but equally rewarding) discovery contractors.
They are found in the buildings with pictures of a blue banner above
the door. They will pay you for your discoveries and you should have
enough money to buy a good sword and armor.
Sail north to Copenhagen and Lubeck. It doesn't matter which one
you stop in first, but for example, let's say you go to Copenhagen
first. Go to the item shop and buy the Plate Mail Armor (if you don't
have 14,000 gold pieces to spare after the purchase, then buy the
Half Plate). Then sail to Lubeck (just southeast of Copenhagen) and
go the item shop at 2:00 AM. Purchase the Flamberge (it is class-A
rank and an excellent thrusting sword).
Pick a fight with anyone who has Battle Skill of 10 or less for a better
chance of winning. You can see their skill buy sailing right next to
them and pushing the 'A' button and Left on the D-Pad to the sword
icon. Push 'A' again and you should see a screen that has a bunch of
stats for the opponent. On the far left you will see a picture of a
sword and a number next to it. It's usually 1-30. The lower the number
the weaker and less skilled the enemy. Start the battle if their number
is low enough and you feel comfortable opposing it. If your number of
crewmen is lower than their's by a difference of over 20, don't try to
duel the captain of the enemy flagship. They should try and duel you
and you don't have to lose any crewmen (if you're lucky). But if you're
number is over their's or under by less than 20, go ahead and challenge
the enemy to a duel.
Once the duel starts, you'll see a bunch of individual cards at the
bottom of the screen with a number and a larger letter. The letters
(if you're attacking) are 'T', 'S', and 'L'. 'T' means Thrust, 'S' means
Strike, and 'L' means Lash. If you're defending first, the letters are
'P', 'D', and 'B'. 'P' means Parry, 'D' means Dodge, and 'B' means Block.
Don't worry about the numbers for now. In order to succeed, you must
understand what these mean and how they can help you. Say that your
sword is the Flamberge (a Thrusting sword), you will want to Thrust
more than anything to deliver the most possible damage. Below is a
table of best attacks and defenses:
Thrust --) Block
Strike --) Parry
Lash --) Dodge
Parry --) Lash
Dodge --) Thrust
Block --) Strike
In other words, try to anticipate what your opponent will do, and do
the attack that has the greater affect. If you think they'll Block,
remember to Thrust. You will deliver more damage and win the fight.
Take all of their money and ships and sell the ships you don't need at
any port (in the Shipyard). It's also important to switch ships from
the beginning ship (Caravela Latina) to basically anything else. Keep
fighting with the strategy of the duel and you'll be successful in the game.
