Treasure chest trick

Sent in by Adrian N. As soon as you pick up a treasure chest, keep pressing the attack button. If you press it fast enough, the chest will actually start to slide away from you. Sometimes, the traps inside won't hurt you because of this (you're too far away.) This trick works best with the sprite.

Raise your experience levels and weapon levels easy

Sent in by Bryan Carter When you first reach the Dwarf Village, the battles at Elinee's Castle can be hard, especially Spikey Tiger and the Werewolves. To raise you levels and Weapon levels easy, just find a Green Drop in the Dwarf Caves. Now, kill off all the other enemies that might interfere. (ex-Bat, Goblin). Now, fight the Green Drop. If there are Three of them, kill two and leave the last one. It will multiply. Kill of the others except for one. Let it multiply etc. This can raise you weapon levels early or later if you have problems or not enough time to go around killing random monsters.

Fight a boss and never get hit

Sent in by Jeff White There is a way to fight a boss and never get hit, but in order to do this, you must have some magic. First, you must figure out when a boss is going to attack. This is easier to figure out with some bosses than others. The Mana beast is the easiest to figure out since it will only do damage when it flies by. When the boss tries to attack one of the characters, use the girl and cast a spell on the character being attacked. (In the case of the Mana beast, all 3 characters.) The longer the spell animation, the better the results. If timed right, the spell animation around the character will begin and the monster will do no damage with its attack. It helps to have a good supply of walnuts when trying this.

Advance in the game without going to the water palace

Sent in by L404063@Hotmail.com There is a way you can advance in the game without going to the water palace. Go to the cannon travel man in Protos. He'll tell you that Jema paid for you to be blasted to the water palace. Accept his offer. When you land go back to the cannon travel place. This time when you are given the choice of going to the water palace or to Gaia's navel. If You pick Gaia's Navel, you can skip going to the Water Palace. However, please note that if you do not go to the Water Palace before you beat Spikey tiger, the game will mess up and you will be stuck because the game will not give you Undine's powers.

Power up the sprites magic

Sent in by L404063@Hotmail.com The best place (to me) to power up the sprites magic is to go into the desert outside of the desert town, place your allies action grids as far on 'keep away' and 'guard' as you can, Select the Hero as your player, and keep on hitting the spiders legs with spells. If you cast fast enough you can keep on casting your spells on the spiders legs until the Spirte runs out of MP's. If you have magic absorb and if you cast it fast and continuously enough you can steal 99 MP's from the Spider's legs even they only have 21 MP's. This trick works on other enemies as well.

Power uping the girl's magic

Sent in by L404063@Hotmail.com If you power up the girl's magic anyplace in a town (say a inn) the magic spell will not be as effective (if you want to level up) as if you cast it outside of town. Thus, I suggest to Power-up the girl's magic that you cast it in either the wind palace or the Water Palace (Wind palace recommended. When you run out of MP's just ask Luka or Grandpa to recover you and don't save unless you want to. If you want this process to go faster, be the boy and have the girl cast her magic on the sprite.

Alternative spell

Sent in by Dem0n Every spell has an alternative. Get ALL spells to level 8. Keep using magic until you get special effects. Here's the ones for the Sprite. Undine Freeze-Ice Smash-Huge Glaciers smash the enemies. BAM!! HP Absorb-HP Sucker-Have a double twirl of HP!! Acid Rain-Deluge-Acid rain pours down!! Gnome Gem Missile-Shatter-A huge gem appears, shines twice and shatters and the fragments home onto the enemy. Land Slide-Mudball-A mudball with a face lands on the enemy. Speed Down-Ivy-A triple growth of tangly plants to slow them for longer Sylphid: AirBlast-Tornado-Tornado time!!! Thunderbolt-Electrocution-A huge, thick bolt of electricity zaps the opponent. Silence-Shut up-Confuse them for a long, long time. Salamando FireBall-RedDragon-Three fiery dragons fly around the hapless enemy. Exploder-TNT-Explosions are big, round and make a funny sound. LavaWave-Volcano-A fountain of lava appears and fries the monsters. Luna ChangeForm-Transform-No real difference. Looks flashier. MP Absorb-MP Sucker-Have a double twirl of MP!! LunarMagic-MoonMana-No real difference. Looks flashier. Shade EvilGate-BlackHole-A much more powerful version of EvilGate. DarkForce-DarkEternal-Lots of dark orbs, and an explosion much like salamando's special exploder (except it is black, naturally) Dispel-Disable-No real difference. Looks flashier. Dryad Burst-SelfDestruct-Same as special exploder, only you blow up as well. You do not sustain damage. SleepFlower-SleepyPetals-Makes them sleep for longer. ManaMagic-ManaMagic-No difference at all.

Royal jam tip

Sent in by Brian SHerlock If one of your allies have been hit, and their HP is at 0, before the red numbers disappear, use a royal jam on them, and they will be alive and well. However, if you don't do it in time for the red letters to be there, (and this is costly) use 2-3 royal jams, and then they will be revived, so to speak. But you must do this before they see the "reaper."

Boost the Girl's spell levels

Sent in by Paul Sander Here's a great way to boost the Girl's spell levels. First, it is good to have a lot of gold. Go to an Inn and stay if you need to. When you wake up in the morning, you can start. Pick the elemental you want to boost and choose the cheapest spell and cast it. Do this over and over again. When you need more MP stay at the inn again. Keep doing this over and over until you boost the spell up as far as you want. This is great because the girl can cast her spells practically anywhere. If you go to Potos Village (where you start the game, to get past the guard hold up and keep pressing select, to get out hold down and press select.) The process becomes cheap because the inn is only 5 gold. To build the sprite's magic exit Potos village to he left and practice on the Rabites, staying at the Inn when you need to. To gain weapon levels easy start in Potos Village. Exit to the left. keep going until you pass over the second bridge and onto the next screen. Equip your all your characters with the weapons they need to practice with (they gain experience just holding the weapons while someone else fights!) Fight rabites until you get to the bushes and turn back. go to the first screen and fight all the rabites until you get to the bush on the other side of the bridge. Stay between the two sets of bushes and whack all the rabites cause they come back when you leave the screen. It shouldn't be too had because rabites are weak and rarely hurt you. You will probably be able to power one weapon one level with about 25-30 rabites, which is two or three "trips" between the bushes. At later levels the rabites can be destroyed in one hit making it faster. Also, If you need candy the rabites will drop lots of it while you work, and its free! Click here

Level eight magic tip

Sent in by Steven Schopmeyer I have devised a way to put ALL your magic at level 8 without endangering your characters. For the girl, it's simple. Go to the wind or water palace, and continually cast spells on the sprite. To get the sprite's magic up, it's a little complicated. First, go to Neko's near the Water palace. When you go out to where the monsters are, stop. Start casting non-lethal spells on the rabbet or lulabud. (Silence is pretty funny.) DO NOT LET YOUR MAGIC GET TO ZERO! When your magic gets low, cast Magic Absorb on the lullabud. For some reason, they have 10 MP. Go figure. (Wait, don't they cast sleep flower sometimes?) Oh well. Now you can cast some more spells. Keep it up by going off screen and coming back and you can suck out it's magic again! I'll admit this gets tedious, but you can get ALL LEVEL EIGHT MAGICS!!

Win the Test of Courage

Sent in by Jim Carlson Most people think that the best way to win the Test of Courage is to not use magic. But using Evil Gate levels: 3-5 does around 135 hit points of damage per attack. This is a VERY easy way to defeat your shadows in the Test of Courage!

Beating Spikey Tiger

Sent in by Max Chen I found a easy way to beat Spikey Tiger without a problem. The Tiger is very hungry so sacrifice yourself and let him eat you while the other two beating on it. It will only do about 5-9HP damage per bite, since you have the highest defense and hp so it shouldn't be a problem. You will be able to get up a few times and take a few whack at it. The tiger is so busy eating you that he doesn't do any other moves. I know it sounds weird by letting it eat you, but it works. Instead of watching the whole party getting 20-30 damage, only one person is getting 5-9HP damage.

Magic tip

Sent in by Fletcher Moore Here's something about magic. You should know by looking at the level menu that you have to get 100 point for your magic or weapon's power level to go up. Here is how to determine how many times you have to use a spell for it to work. Whatever level you are trying to get to subtract that from 10. Example: say you were trying to get Salamando to level 3. Subtract 3 from 10 and you get 7. 7 is how many point you would get each time you used the spell. You would have to use the Salamando magic 15 times. (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98, 105) If you use your magic when you do not have your weapons in your hands, like in a town. You only get half as many points. The same thing applies to weapons, I think, but I haven't tested it. The only difference is that you have to kill the enemy. If your teammate does it you only get half as many points.

Earn a lot of money quickly

Sent in by Joseph Godino As the game progresses, new equipment and better weapons from Watts become more and more expensive. A good way to earn a lot of money quickly is to repeatedly enter the castle at Northtown and defeat armored men at the gate. They are worth 500 GP each. This can be done even if the castle gate is locked. Do not use magic. You do not get money by defeating nonboss enemies with magic. Use the same strategy for the armored man in the second room of the Darkness Palace in the cave below Joch's mountain. This tougher armored man is worth 1000 GP. The giant head before him is also worth an extravagance. When the Darkness Palace is completed, the monsters are gone forever, but you may always attack armored men at the locked castle in Northtown. Try using the whip.

Re-enter Potos Village

Sent in by Joseph Godino Of importance in the beginning stage of the game is the fact that you can always reenter Potos Village (the one from which you are banned) by using your companions to overpower the beadle who keeps you out. You walk toward him, and continue to hold the "up" directional portion of the keypad. While you are holding it, repetitively press select. One of your companions will enter Potos and the rest will follow. Since the hotel charge is only 5 GP in Potos, it is a good place to sleep over and over again after your girl and sprite child have a day of practicing magic to improve their skill. After a sleep, magic is restored. If you cannot leave Potos, don't panic. Just reenter the inn, exit, and go straight to the beadle to try again.

Kill Karon

Sent in by Joseph Godino You can actually kill Karon, the Robin's Foot boatsman from the Moon Palace. Get him on your screen while you are off of the boat, and use magic on him. Unfortunately, he comes back to life every single time. It sure would be fun to massacre the mushrooms in Matango, but it is not possible.

Fighting the Mana Beast

Sent in by Joseph Godino When you are defeating the Mana Beast, always make sure you equip the best armor that money can buy, and be fully stocked on walnuts, wish cups, Royal jam, candy, and chocolate. The girl and the boy who is the Mana knight are the most important players here. Each time the dragon charges, he charges twice. Immediately when the dragon swirls to make his first charge, have the girl cast Lucent Barrier from Lumina on the party. Immediately thereafter, have the girl cast Lunar Boost from Luna on the Mana knight. Switch to him and have him charge his sword to a high level like seven or eight (keep holding the weapon charge button down even if this means suffering a Lucent Beam while you continue to hold it), and attack the beast. The party shall be protected from both of the beast's charges, and the beast shall suffer 999 damage points each time this is done properly.

Geting the Mana Sword

Sent in by Game Master There is a way to get the Mana Sword without using Game Genie. 1st, you must have Flammie. Call him, then fly to Ice Country. Land on the small island to the north of Ice Country(not the one with the light-house and Pecard, the caretaker). Then, press and hold L, R, and select, then press Start, and your game will reset. Start a new game. (NOTE: If the beginning screens don't move, the code won't work, try it again until it works) Go through the game until you reach the earthquake before you reach the Mantis Ant, (don't bother fighting the rabbets along the way or saving) after you and Elliot fall into the pit, hold L, R, Select, and Start to reset after Elliot says his first line. Then start the file you saved at Neko on the island. You will be in the Mantis Ant's Lair and it will be there. Defeat it and you will get another sword orb. A sequence will start, but you will really be at where you saved in the game NOTE: This may scramble or erase your game, save on a different file. If you use this code before you fight a boss where you get a sword orb, (for instance, the Thunder Gigas) you will not be able to continue.

Gauntlet

Sent in by Yan Z. You can get a Gauntlet by repeatedly killing Armored Men in The Palace of Darkness.

Leveling up your magic

Sent in by Jedi Zoccaa Leveling up your magic is a good idea. What I do is wait until I'm about to beat the Mana Fortress, and go through an easy place just killing monsters with my weak magic elementals (the Great Forest is a good place). You can get all your elementals to at least level five in an hour, easily. When it reaches level eight, it sometimes will do something weird and causes more damage.

Girl and Sprite tips

Sent in by Jedi Zoccaa The Girl and Sprite must never be underestimated. Though you should always yourself be the Hero (because you can more easily control your Allies' magic), the other two can prove to be a great asset. Use the Girl's healing and strengthening powers as often as you wish if you get her leveled up greatly, she won't run out of MP very fast. The Sprite's magic can almost be used infinitely, because he eventually learns the spell under Luna called MP Absorb. Keep Luna VERY leveled up under Sprite and the Girl!

Tip on the Hero's sword

Sent in by Jedi Zoccaa The Hero's sword should be used as often as possible, even though the spear is usually stronger. At the end of the game, you will need his sword at level eight.

Action Grid tip

Sent in by Jedi Zoccaa Always pay attention to your Action Grid. Though it may seem like it does nothing, it does. Your Allies should gradually come from Defending/Staying Away to Attacking/Advancing as they level up. Even the Hero's should be kept up, in case he should die and you have to be the Girl or Sprite. In that situation, be the Girl, because you need to use Sprite's magic more often.

Make your moogling last longer

Sent in by John Calvin To make your moogling last longer, first moogle the person, then midgetize them. This comes in handy when you don't want the computer-controlled players to steal your kills.

Dispel Slow

Sent in by John Calvin To dispel a Slow cast on you, charge a weapon, then release it. You will then return to your normal speed.

Bosses and spells

Sent in by John Calvin On certain bosses, and certain spells, you can do stuff. Like on almost any boss, continually cast Shade's Dark Force, without waiting to see the damage, the boss will get continually darker, different colors for different Elementals.

Stock up on supplies

Sent in by Kris Smith Here's a way to stock up on supplies before you get to Spikey Tiger (the boss of the Witch's Castle). Since you don't have any magic to use against him yet, you will most likely need items to heal yourself, which requires money. Here's an easy way to build up enough money for supplies. Make your way through the castle until you get to the dungeon where Neko and a few soldiers are being held. Free them, and one soldier will tell you that all 3 of your guys need to step on the switch upstairs in order to active the bridge. Go to Neko, and save. At this time, you may want to try to buy as much as you can afford. You will mostly want Candies, Chocolates, and Cups of Wishes (Royal Jams couldn't hurt, but they're expensive). Now, go up to the switch. This activates the bridge. On the character you're controlling, equip either the bow or the boomerang (I think the bow is a little stronger, so you may want to use that). The first enemy you will see is an Eye Spy. Kill it, and look to the right. Across the small gap, there should be two Werewolves. Now, use your bow or boomerang to attack them from across the gap. When they are killed, enter the door above you, and then go back down. All three enemies will be back, and you can defeat them over again. By repeating this, you can gain up a lot of money to buy all of the supplies you will need with little danger to yourself (all you need to worry about is the Eye Spy). For reference, Eye Spys give you 30 Gold, and Werewolves give you 36. That's 102 Gold per battle! You can keep fighting them as long as you want to build up gold, and every so often, visit Neko in the dungeon to save and buy more supplies. You should probably keep fighting these guys until you have 4 Candies, 4 Chocolates, and 4 Cups of Wishes. If you want to fight longer, you can get 4 Royal Jams too, but your hit points should be small enough that most of the time, you will only need one candy to completely heal you. Still, since you can only get 4 of each, if you think you will need more than 8 (Candies and Chocolates), go for it.

Kakkara desert trick

Sent in by Kris Smith Here's another interesting thing you can do once you get to Kakkara desert. If you've played the game before, you probably know the only way to get to the Moon Palace (located in the desert), is by using Flammie to fly you there, and then riding across the space-like area on Karon's boat. In the screen where Flammie drops you, if you go south one screen, you'll slide across a small patch of dirt or something, which only lets you walk one way (down). So, you can't go back up. There's actually a way you can without using Flammie. From Kakkara town, go into the desert and make your way to the north east. You'll know you're going the right way if you start to see stars scattered around the ground (the more, the closer you are). Eventually, you can make your way to the screen that has that dirt patch that won't let you go up. Here's how to get across it. First, look at the dirt. There is a small area where the sand that you CAN walk on go up slightly higher than the other sand, but it's blocked by a Seashell. Equip the sword, and charge it to level 1. Release in front of the dirt patch, and you will fall just short of making it across the gap. Instead, maneuver your character towards the part where the sand goes a little higher up, while you are sliding back down. Now, charge up to level 1 again, and you should be able to make it across. Unfortunately, when you get to Karon's boat, it says he's out to lunch. This was a sort of fail-safe that Squaresoft put in so you can't get to the Moon Palace before you go to the Light Palace (in the Gold City). So, this don't really help, but it is pretty neat.

Two Spear Orbs

Sent in by James Terry After you beat the wall at Pandora, don't get the king's treasures, then go all the way to Santa's house, and you'll get 2 Spear Orbs.

See a little face on the water

Sent in by Alexandre Hamelin Fly with Flammie and head for the ice country. Stand above the ice palace and look at east (you must do that with PRECISION!). Then go slowly over the sea and look down. You should see a LITTLE face on the water somewhere between ice country and pure land!!! You probably wont see it the first time. Keep trying.

Sleep as a Moogle

Sent in by Shawn Ever experience sleeping as a Moogle? Well you can, if you save Karakka's water, by getting a Sea Hare Tail, but you need Flammie! Go to a island that looks small (Riding on Flammie) but round (GRASS) and go in the house where one of those guy's who give you items (At the island) and he'll give you a Sea Hare Tail, as long as you say YES! And then Ride on Flammie back to Karakka, and the owner will give you the "Moogle Belt"! After you get the "Moogle Belt", then at the Inn, or outside the Inn, any Inn, exactly any Inn, then use the "Moogle Belt" on everyone on your team, then pay the guy who owns the Inn to sleep, and...the rest is for you to find out!

Special spell

Sent in by John Jacques When you get a spell to Level 8 use it a lot and it will turn into a special spell for that one time and the more you use it the more often it will do its special. The special usually takes off more damage to bad guys or restores a lot more MP then usual, for instance fireball's special is the fireballs turn into kind of the shape of a dragon and it takes off a bit more then the normal level 8 spell. To gain levels with spells all you have to do is cast them a lot.

Enemy and magic tip

Sent in by Zachary Hubert If an enemy is using a magic on one of your buddies, use a Midge Mallet or a Moogle Belt on them twice. No damage will be dealt! NOTE: Unfortunately, if you are being attacked with magic, theres nothing you can do, so its best if you play a 2-3 player!

Sleep as a tiny moogle

Sent in by Richard How would you like to sleep as a tiny moogle instead of a moogle? First get the moogle belt from the island and get the Midget mallet. Make everyone in the group small and then moogle them. Go to the local inn and then stay.

Reset the game

If you need to reset the game, hold down L, R, and Select. Then press Start.

Spells and the Mana Seeds

The levels of your spells can go up to the number of Mana Seeds you've collected. Sometimes it's worth practicing your spells in order to raise them levels and make them more powerful. This makes attack spells do more damage, and 'modifier' spells last longer. It's worth getting most of the elementals up to level 4, certainly, although it isn't absolutely necessary.

Boss Tips

Once you've learned LUNA magic, the LUNAR BOOST and MOON POWER spells can drastically increase the amount of damage you do. If both spells are in use, and you've cast the appropriate SABER spell on yourself, 999 damage is not unheard of for a level 6-8 attack. EVIL WALL: In Ruins south of Pandora * Some people have suggested that the best way to defeat this Boss is to ignore its outer eyes entirely, and focus your magic spells on the central eye. This may be easier than my preferred method. * I prefer to knock out the two eyes on the sides, first. Use the Targeting command to make the other two characters attack one eye each. When both have been knocked out, the Wall will start moving south. If it pushes you against the southern wall, you all die... so you have to be quick. Hitting the central eye with three or four EARTH SLIDE spells will take it (and the rest of the Wall) out easily. DARK SLIME: In the Mana Fortress (2nd Fortress Boss) * Try to stay lined up with the center of the Slime, and whack on it with high-level WHIP attacks, and spells from the SHADE Elemental. Keep in mind that the Slime gets larger as you damage it, so it will become very difficult to stay in line with the center of the Slime if you move around much. * An amusing thing about the Slime is the way it reacts to having spells cast on it. If you hit it with a spell, it likes to cast the Level 8 version of the spell back on a party member. Since it also likes to cast ACID STORM to lower your defense rating, I cast WALL on the entire party. Let a few ACID STORMs bounce off you and back at the Slime, and then cast some offensive spells at it. The Level 8 versions it throws back at you will bounce off your WALL spells and do serious damage to it. DARK LICH: In the Mana Fortress (3rd Fortress Boss) * As soon as you're able to move, go over to the west side of the screen. Stand directly west of the Dark Lich, don't move too far north or south. Set your two followers to 'Guard' and 'Keep Away', so they won't try to attack the Lich and get killed. Wield the WHIP, which you hopefully have at a very high level by now. The Dark Lich (Thanatos) is vulnerable to LUMINA magic, so have the girl from Pandora cast LIGHT SABER on you. Stand at a safe distance from the Dark Lich, and charge your WHIP to the highest level you can. Then, when the Lich pokes his head out between his hands, or when he completely materializes (and no longer seems transparent), cut loose with the WHIP. You should do a very large amount of damage. He has 6666 hit points. Charge the WHIP again, and repeat. Easy, isn't it? MANA BEAST: At the Mana Fortress (4th and FINAL Fortress Boss) * Do all the damage yourself. Don't worry about getting your followers to try and hurt the beast, because they're be very ineffective. Wield the SWORD, which should be at level 8 by now. * Be aware that you must have *both* of your followers cast MANA SWORD on you, in order to have it work. When you've done this, the game will print 'REVIVED THE MANA SWORD!' at the top of the screen. When the magic expires, you'll be almost incapable of damaging the Beast. Additionally, when it expires, you immediately lose your 'charge' on your weapon, and will have to start holding down the B button all over again. To reduce the chance of this happening in the middle of combat, cast the MANA SWORD spells quickly when the Mana Beast swoops in to physically attack after its fireball. * Cast LUNAR BOOST and MOON POWER on yourself to improve your damage. * Don't bother charging your weapon. Just swing every time you get back to 100%, as long as the MANA SWORD magic is still running. Stand right in the (left-to-right) center of the platform, as far north as you can. * Avoid casting WALL if at all possible, as it will prevent you from being able to cast MANA SWORD on yourself until it expires. You'll be casting MANA SWORD several times during the combat.

Get the Mana sword more quickly

Sent in by Alan This code will allow you to get the Mana sword more quickly. Once you get the Flammie drum, call the dragon and fly him to a small island north of ice country. Save your game at Neko. After saving push L R and start at thesame time to restart the game. Then start a new game and play until you fall into the pit where the Mantis Ant lives, when your companion says his first line push L R and Start at the same time to reset. Start the game that you saved earlier and begin playing. You should start at the Mantis Ant, beat him and you will get the swords orb. You will repeat an earlier cinema scene but will actually be at the point you left off. You can repeat this sequence over and over until you have the best sword. Sometimes this doesn't work the first time and if not try it again. It is also a good idea to have a backup file, just in case.

How do I find the Sprite Village?

Go to the Spring Forest, the part that is green, in the lower left, walk counter clockwise through the seasons, when you get to spring again, you will here an explosion, go to the right, and you will find a path to Spirite Village.

Three secret passageways

The first one is in Matango. Go to the inn. In the inn, go to the lower right corner of the room. Try to go down in to the wall. You will find that you can walk outside around the room and to the back of the counter where the innkeeper is. The second one is in Southtown. At the lower left of the town there is a line of trees just up from the rest of the forest. Go to the right side of this line of trees. Try to go left. You will come to a small clearing in the forest. The third one is in Tashica. Go to the left side of a stairway in the middle of the castle. Try to go right. You will go under the stairway and to a shop on the other side.

Enemy Location and Treasure Listing

This chart lists the location of enemies and the two possible treasures you will receive after defeating them. The first treasure is more likely to be found than the second treasure. Some enemies will not have any treasure or any second treasure. Some treasure chests may contain traps that will harm the member that opened it. Using Syphlid's Analyzer can tell if the treasure is a trap or not. If the treasure chest glows red when you are near it, it is not a trap and is safe to open. If the treasure chest does not glow red than there is a trap inside of the treasure chest. Your chance of finding traps inside of treasure chests will decrease as you increase in levels.
