Wolfenstein 3-D

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by SizzleSword Wolfenstein 3-D is a fairly popular computer game, so it is no wonder that ID Software brought it to the SNES. Just in case you haven't played either of the versions, it's a basic 3-D 1st person shooter game, taking place during World War II. You are a soldier that got kidnapped by some of Hitler's soldiers, put into a prison, but then escaped and are now running through the fortress trying to destroy Hitler and get back home to your family.

Graphics 10 out of 10

Since this game is almost all Mode 7, all of the graphics are great... Even though there are some parts that look a little fuzzy, everything moves pretty quickly, without any slowdown. There were different types of Nazi symbols on the walls of the computer version, but were edited in able to be put onto the Super NES.

Music and Sound 9 out of 10

This has almost the exact music from the computer version. Some of the themes sound like marching themes, others sound like fast-paced, 'hurry up' themes. They aren't marvelous, but they fit the situations perfectly.

Game Challenge 10 out of 10

This game has 3 difficulties, from what I remember. There was Easy, Medium, and Hard... In the game, they were "Please don't hurt me", "Lemme at 'em", and "Bring it on!"... There are 3 versions of this game, so there might be some other names for the difficulties. I usually play the game on the medium setting, since it is so hard to play on the "Bring it on!" setting.

Game Play-Fun 7 out of 10

It's pretty fun getting guns and killing Nazis, but it kind of gets old after a while. There are 5 types of weapons, and only about 6 kinds of enemies (not including bosses), and they just keep coming. I'd have given this game a higher score in this category if there were just a few more enemies and weapons.

Frustration

The only frustration that you'll encounter is whenever you try to play the game on the hardest difficulty. The enemies never stop coming, and some can kill you with one shot. Besides that, it's not TOO frustrating.

Replayability 6 out of 10

After beating this game, you probably won't feel like beating it again for a while. Since there are only a few types of enemies and weapons, it gets really old, and some of the levels look a lot alike. They should have added some newer stuff to this version; it seems almost exactly the same as the computer version.

Game Value 9 out of 10

I bought this game for about $18 at a place called MicroGames, so I guess I got a pretty good deal. The last time I saw it at Funcoland, it was about $20... I guess it's not too bad of a price for such a long game.

Overall 8 out of 10

Well, I like this game a lot, but it just keeps repeating itself over and over, not bringing out anything really new. If you buy this game, there's a chance that you'll beat it once, and never play it again. One good thing is that there are a few Super NES-only levels that don't show up in any of the computer versions, so that's pretty cool... Overall, it's just an average 1st person shooter.
