UN Squadron
Reviewed by Chris Bartal
UN Squadron is an addictive fighter-plane shooting game. Much
in the fashion of the old NES games. You are able to upgrade your
plane as you earn money for each mission. There is some strategy
involved as well as hand-eye coordination.
Graphics 7 out of 10
The graphics of the planes and enemies are done in typical
Capcom style. However, you do not really pay much attention
to the graphics when you are playing, you are too busy trying not
to be shot down. The graphics in between levels are decent, but
nothing spectacular.
Music and Sound 6 out of 10
The music is the same for every single level, and it does not change
except when you are fighting the boss for each level. But it is kind
of catchy after awhile.
Challenge 10 out of 10
It does not take long to get the hang of the game, but the last few
levels can be very difficult. It is best to keep The Crusader (plane)
until you can purchase the EFREET (the ultimate fighter plane; it can
handle every weapon). The normal mode takes a long time to conquer,
but the hard level is not much more difficult. There is a GAMER level
(press the L and the X button using the second controller during the
option screen). This level is extremely difficult.
Gameplay-Fun 9 out of 10
This game is a lot of fun to play, and you probably won't notice the
time unless someone informs you that you have been playing for
two hours straight.
Frustration
This game is really difficult to beat. It is not hard to master the first
few levels, but two of the last levels can be tough. It is important to
have the EFREET plane to beat these levels. The very last boss takes
a long time to beat. You only need a few weapons, however; the Bulldog,
Phoenix, machine gun, and the Mega Crush. There is a place in the last
level before you get to the two bosses where you can get your
weapons recharged.
Replayability 9 out of 10
As I mentioned, the game has the secret GAMER level, and
chances are that you can't beat that.
Game Value 9 out of 10
I payed $11 dollars for a used copy, which is a fair price. I
believe that it is available for even less if you shop around.
Secrets 8 out if 10
There are secrets available on every level, you just have to shoot
around to find them all. One valuable secret in the Forest Fortress
is a unicorn (which gives you a force-field that can withstand
approximately four hits) that you can get flying over the rocket
base and not shooting the tree on the right of the rockets and
hitting the tree with your plane, you should get the force-field.
There is also a unicorn when you get to the boss of the Inside of
the Mountain level. You have to fly past the energy core on the ceiling,
and fly up to the ceiling and shoot, and there will be a unicorn.
