Super Mario Kart

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Matt Oelfke Super Mario Kart is a racing game using familiar Nintendo characters for up to two players using split-screen. It uses a normal behind-the- racer view. You can compete by yourself in the 50, 100, and (if you qualify) 150cc modes, which are basically difficulty levels. There are four cups, Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special. With two players, you can compete for the Cups, or play against each other in normal racing and the Battle Mode.

Graphics: 7 out of 10

The graphics are good for Super Nintendo, but more background effects would be welcome, although it does have some. The racers are well detailed, and all the effects (like small kart). The scenery is very good, and there's not much, if any, strain on your eyes.

Music and Sound: 7 out of 10

The traditional racing sounds are very good, although you can't really hear your opponent creep up behind you until he's right next to you. The sounds for objects and question boxes are somewhat familiar, and cartoon-like in usual Mario fashion. All in all, the game has strong and weak points.

Game Challenge: 9 out of 10

This game is really hard to beat when challenging the computer for the cups, and playing against a friend is always difficult. The AI is pretty good, especially when it notices your approach. Sometimes however, the games can get frustrating, because in 100 and 150cc, one or two mistakes and you're probably out of first place contention. It doesn't help that the computer has infinite items. This can be helped somewhat, however, by playing with (and against) an experienced second player, so it's not that bad.

Game Play-Fun: 10 out of 10

This game is very humorous, especially when playing two-player and you hit your opponent with an item. 150cc is challenging enough to keep you playing it even after you've beaten it several times. Add in the always fun battle mode, and this game is nearly unbeatable in the racing category of games for fun.

Frustration

As noted before, this games can be frustrating on the harder levels, like Rainbow Road, because it's easy to make mistakes. The computer also has infinite items, and makes sure to use one when you come by. Therefore, it sometimes takes patience to get this game beaten.

Replayability: 8 out of 10

This game will keep you coming for a long time. Its two-player capabilities will make you continue to play for as long as you can find challenging opponents. In fact, I've had this game since it came out, and I still play it.

Overall: 9 out of 10

You should get this game if you have a Super Nintendo and any way of getting a copy. You won't regret the decision!
