Street Fighter II: The World Warriors
Reviewed by Tim Keogh
This is it. If you have ever played games like the Tekken series, Dead
or Alive 2, any SNK fighter, Marvel vs. games, and even some of th
modern pro wrestling games, you are playing a descendent of Street
Fighter II. This game alone created a whole new genre known as the
fighting genre. It opened up the secret moves list and thousands of
wannabes followed. This is how it all began. No other action game
before this created this much depth in strategy. People developed their
own styles to use each character and held large tournaments at arcades
and on the SNES. At the time, it was the ultimate multi-player game.
Graphics: 9 out of 10
The pixelated graphics are very nice. All though Mortal Kombat II had
better looking characters, they move jerkely unlike in Street Fightr.
The amount of background characters was amazing at the time and the
characters movements seemed so fluid. The breakable objects in many
of the levels was a fun thing to have. The boxes in Guiles stage, the
barrel in Ken's, the statue in Bison's and those japanese signs in Ryu's.
This game was an amazing feat in the early 90s.
Music and Sound: 9 out of 10
The music is very memorable. I always seem to be whistling Ryu's theme
song or Blankas while taking a major test (why I don't know), but the music
is amazing. Besides Guile's voice, the sound is amazing as well. Although
Guile sounds so high pitched and he is a strong air force pilot. The yells
for pain and special move sounds sound like somebody talking (in japanese).
Game Challenge: 10 out of 10
Almost everyone has trouble with one fighter when trying to beat the
game. First its Vega and then after a while you can get a double perfect
on Vega yet somehow you loose to Balrog, BALROG!! The game is challenging
and it seems cheap that the computer can instantly charge up a move that
takes 2 seconds to charge up and execute. Bumping up the skill level to the
highest gives the biggest challenge and trying to beat the game with every
character may take you hours. The game is easy enough for beginners to
pick up and challenging enough for skilled players. It has a really good
learning curve.
Game Play-Fun: 10 out of 10
Compare it to Goldeneye, the multiplayer might be lame. But compared
to other multiplayer games of the time it is a blast. Playing v.s. battle
is so much fun against a friend. If your both at the same skill level or
handicap is evenly distributed, this game is a blast. Playing 2 player in
arcade mode is cool too because you can play the mini-games versus each
other and that is a lot of fun. Playing by yourself is enjoyable too. With the
addition of the mini-games like smashing a car or breaking a wall of bricks,
you'll be really happy to take a break from fighting enemies and beating up
inanimate objects. If your a perfectionist who wants to learn all the moves
for all the characters, this game may never get truly put in the attic. NEVER!!!
Frustration
This game does get frustrating. Especially if your trying to beat the game
on hardest for the first time. You may end up fighting Vega or Bison it seems
endlessely. You'll loose the first round, get a perfect in the second, double
KO the third and loose the last yet both your oppenent doesn't have any life
left either!! This seems to happen to me all the time!! I felt like throwing
my SNES across the room!!!
Replayability: 10 out of 10
This game is like playing basketball. You can always get better. Practice
makes perfect. Instead of beating the game and selling it, you hone in on
your skills and try to beat the kid next door. Then you find someone else
who's always better than you. The training may never end. There are 8
characters to pick from each with at least 2 special moves. It may take
time to find the best character for you.
Game Value: 10 out of 10
You can buy this game for $3. Do you need another incentive? This game
is one of the best games ever not to mention one of the most influential
and its 3 Freakin' dollars. This game's an absolute bargain. Get it. (that is
if you don't have it already)
Overall: 10 out of 10
This game created a genre. This game is amazing even today. It's controls
are perfect and it's such fun game to play. Street Fighter II turbo and Super
are also VERY similar games. Get one of em. If you play any of the Alpha
series, this is where Ryu and Ken began their road to glory. This is one of
the most popular games for the Super NES.
