The Ren and Stimpy Show: Space Cadet Adventures
Reviewed by Danielle L.
Everyone remembers the Ren and Stimpy show from Nickelodeon (and if
you don't, shame on you!). Who could forget the lovable fat, red cat and
his nasty old Chihauhau friend? Mmmkay.. not many of you. Well, if you
were ever a fan of the show, or just like games where you can spit
hairballs at people, this is the game for you!
Graphics: 9 out of 10
The graphics follow the cartoon pretty faithfully, especially for 8-bit.
Ren looks like Ren and Stimpy looks like Stimpy. My only complaint was
that some of the enemies lack detail, but I'm still impressed by how
much Ren and Stimpy look the same way they do in cartoons.
Music and Sound: 10 out of 10
Its excellent! You hear the TV show's theme song throughout the game,
and you even hear the Muddy Mudskipper theme occasionally. I especially
liked the intro, where you hear a voice clip of Ren yelling "You eediot!".
And Stimpy even shouts "Ren!" when he picks up a 1-up, which is in the
shape of Ren's head. The sound effects are also great. Bouncy sounds
accompany jumping enemies, and their is a suprememly satisfying noise
when Stimpy spits a hairball at something.
Game Challenge: 7 out of 10
The beginning is really easy, but towards the middle, its hard to figure
out where you need to go (I would know, I've been stuck on the same
level for almost a year). The fact that there are no strategy guides for
this game just makes matters worse. But, if you figure it out, its no biggie.
Game Play-Fun: 7 out of 10
Its alright, I get bored with it occasionally because of the yo-yo challenge
factor. If you get stuck in a place and can't figure it out, you just want
to quit and never play again.
Frustration
Very frustrating when you can't figure out what to do, especially after
breezing through the first few levels.
Replayability: 5 out of 10
I haven't beaten it, and I hardly ever play it anymore. There is nothing
to collect, and not really any high-scores to improve upon, so you'll
basically only replay it when you get the urge to hock hairballs at space
aliens. It is pretty lacking in replayability, I think.
Game Value: 10 out of 10
Its pretty old, so you can probably find it on ebay for about five bucks.
Its definitely worth it. It may lack in challenge and replayability, but
for five bucks... can you really be that picky? It is pretty fun for an hour,
or on a car trip, or just every once in awhile when you have nothing better to do.
Overall: 7 out of 10
All in all, this is a good game if you have to go on a long car trip, but
that's about it. The great graphics and sound suffer a bit from occasional
frustration, occasional monotony, and occasionally low replay value. You
might like it, you might not, but if you always liked the cartoon, this
game is worth a shot. You won't be able to get the theme song out of your
head for a really long time.
