Maximum Carnage
Reviewed by Charles White
Super NES version of the incredibly violent underrated arcade classic. The
arcade version of this game was very bloody, gushing rivers of gore,
exploding bodies, and cool weapons made it an almost hit but the same
company released Mortal Kombat (stupid name for a game huh?) to arcades
that year and it became a mega success for its excessive gore and media
attention while Maximum Carnage stayed in the back even though it was far
more brutal and violent than any Mortal Kombat game to date (ok, part 4
had some cool stuff in it). What made this game so fun was the incredible
violence, hordes and hordes of humans came after you with pea shooters
while you mowed them down with chain guns. You could shoot passing tanks
and flaming soldiers would jump out and scream in terror. Very cool game.
Well, Nintendo decided to bring this game home for the Super NES and as usual
they messed it up. Nintendo has always stayed away from anything controversial
that would make them lose money and have always tried to keep up their family
friendly image for overprotective parents who spoil their children so they
could make boatloads of money. Nintendo, like with Mortal Kombat and the
Duke Nukem games(notice how they included the violence in Mortal Kombat 2
after MK made no money cause of no violence) took everything that made it
cool out and replaced it with lame family friendly stuff!
Graphics: B-
These are bad and do not match up with the arcades. They are very nubby
but still ok. They did some wierd things in replacing the gore. There are
these fat guys that in the arcade when you kill them their faces crack
open and blood flies out then their whole bodies go KABOOM. Here they left
the whole process in but the blood is ugly green. Its like this through the
whole game, it looks like someone copied the arcade program on a weak
system, took a green and blue crayon and went over all the blood with it.
The bosses have been changed from menacing and creepy looking to "cute
and funny" with boxer shorts and stuff.
ill impossible.
Game Play-Fun: B-
Ok, Maximum Carnage was never a great one player game, the real fun is
in two player mode. Seeing who can kill the most dudes and trying to get
the best guns before the other guy is very fun and its still here but with
the downsized graphics and zero gore its disappointing and stale.
Frustration
Every time I play a Nintendo version of a game and I know something has
been cut out or edited to "protect" children it makes my blood boil. This is
the case here, the graphics aren't right up to the arcades but if they included
the gore I would be playing 2 player right now with a friend.
Overall: F
The arcade game should be in pool halls or very huge arcades and it should
be about 25 cents to play or even free. The machine itself is probably for
sell so if you see it and its around 70 to 130 bucks get it! Forget this stinky
game, go for the arcade!
