Chrono Trigger
Reviewed by John Symanski
How could I start out reviewing such an awesome game. I would agree that
this should be considered Squaresoft's masterpiece. The plot takes so many
twist turns it would be considered great Japanese literature. We all knew
that this game would be awesome when we found out Square would be making
it, but yet again, the all-star crew at Square pumped out a masterpiece. We
should expect nothing less than perfect when Hironobu Sakaguchi has a part
in the writing of a game. It also offers a variety in cast featuring a teenager,
a frog, a princess, a robot, an inventor, a dark mage, and a cave woman. This
variety of cast is brought by something an rpg has never seen before, time travel.
Graphics 9 out of 10
These graphics reached the peak for any game for the Super NES. They are very anime
looking. In the cutscenes there was some good cinematography. Kinda odd for a
video game. They were just a little bit better than FF6's but not as good as
Treasure Hunter G's.
Music and Sound 10 out of 10
When Nobuo Uematsu is asked to aid in the writing of a musical score we could
expect nothing less than what we got. The OSV of Chrono Trigger was a smash hit
in Japan. My favorite tracks where the main theme and Frog's Theme.
Game Challenge 5 out of 10
It was fairly easy, but Hiromichi Tanaka's games have proven to be more plot
than battle oriented. It was one of my first RPG's, so it was more difficult than.
Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10
It used a different battle system than the classical Final Fantasy's, but it
proved quite enjoyable! It is probably so fun to play because of its compact
plot. It doesn't trail off and has no really long cutscenes like Xenogears! no hard
puzzles or bosses, so it is hard to play for just about 4 hours at a time. I lost a
lot of sleep when staying up to ridiculous hours playing this game.
Frustration
Very good difficulty level. It was a little bit on the easy side though. Not too
many bosses required level building and there are no hard mazes or puzzles. It
is a straight forward rpg that proves pretty fun.
Replayability 10 out of 10
Put it this way, I have beaten Chrono Trigger 16 times. Need I say more. This is all
brought to life by the New Game plus feature. This allows you to start a new game
with the character stats of another game. I can beat Chrono Trigger in about 5 hours
now. It usually is about 20-25 hours, which is pretty short for an rpg. The short
time is countered by the fact that it is packed with plot twists and cool spells.
Game Value 10 out of 10
Yes, it was worth 60 bucks. Not much you can really say here besides yes! This
was brought by the new game plus feature. It allows you to play.
Overall 10 out of 10
The plot is hard to summarize. In other areas this game was absolutely flawless!
This is a must have for any Square lover or RPGamer. I have spent countless hours
reaching all of my character stats to the max and I carry no regrets. This game is
truly outstanding. I would pay 300 dollars for this game. It is hard to find new now,
but I'm sure you will be able to locate in a used game store such as Funcoland. Just
buy it!
