Breath of Fire
Reviewed by Hadoken!
It had been a long while since the world had seen a really good RPG.
Dragon Warrior was boring, Final Fantasy was too aggravating, and
Pokemon wasn't out yet. So, Capcom and Squaresoft got together and
produced this BRILLIANT game. The game play is great, the storyline
is great, and the graphics and sound are GREAT!! This is an RPG that will
take a LOT of your time. Isn't it great?
Graphics: 10 out of 10
Not only are the landscapes brilliantly drawn, but the battle animation
is simply wonderful. In a world of 4-pixel battle sprites, BOF has full,
rich characters. Even the viewpoint is better than anyone else's. Also,
the map screen actually shows all your active fighters walking in line,
instead of having all the other characters sort of "disappear" into the
main one. This game's even a little better than some games today!
Music and Sound: 10 out of 10
What else is there to expect from Capcom, the video game music
composers. This soundtrack will be stuck in your noggin for a long time.
The sounds are clear, the music is great, and it's got great remixing possibilities.
Game Challenge: 10 out of 10
Well, it's not so much challenging as it is puzzling. Some of the areas
are downright mazes to navigate, especially with all the random battles
every five steps. Still, if you don't have a strategy worked out, you don't
stand a chance. Some of the bosses in this game are REALLY hard to beat.
Carry lots of Apples and Lives. You'll need 'em for them dang bosses.
Game Play-Fun: 10 out of 10
You'll have most of your fun in this game wondering what's around
the next turn. With the engaging storyline and superior battle system,
this one will get you hooked FAST. The only thing is, the random battles
will drive you nuts. But hey, it's like that in all RPGs.
Replayability: 9 out of 10
I've been through this game at least five times. It's great! The replay
value is surprisingly high for its genre. Breath of Fire is one of the most
repayable RPGs out there. The same remains true for its sequels, too!
Game Value: 10 out of 10
Yeah, it's worth the price! At a good store (NOT Funcoland) you can get
this game for about 15 or 20 bucks, which is about a millionth of what it's worth.
Overall: 10 out of 10
Overall, this is a very addicting game, and a blast to play. You'll have a
lot of fun with it. Plus, Bleu is kind of cute!
