Wave Race 64
Reviewed by Colin Healy
Wave Race 64, one of the first N64 games, is probably the only game like
it. It's blend of racing and sports game makes for an interesting combination.
Graphics 7 out of 10
Overall, the graphics are not spectacular. However, the waves look and
feel so real it feels as if you're actually riding the waves. The waves go
up and down seemingly randomly. The waves are a great bluish-green color.
You can almost see below the water. Besides the waves, the rest of the
graphics don't look that spectacular. In the first level, there is supposedly
a man standing up on the beach. He looks, however, like a cardboard cutup.
Music and Sound 7 out of 10
Nothing good at all. There is practically no music during the levels. The
only time there is music is between the levels. I guess this music is
decent. The only sound (besides the occasional music ) there is is the
sound of jetskis colliding and the grunts of people when they fall off
their vehicle. Sound is one of the game's weak points.
Game Challenge 8 out of 10
This game is very hard on the reverse mode, especially in one certain
track. The normal mode is very easy, and the other modes just take
some getting used to. if you are used to playing Diddy Kong and Mario
Kart, the control may take some time getting used to. The control is
definitely looser then those other games.
Game Play-Fun 6+ out of 10
I guess the game is okay. Not that fun. When you first start playing the
game you think "wow." However, after a while the game gets a little
boring and repetitive. I quickly turned my interest to other games
besides Wave Race.
Frustration
Yes, the game does get frustrating on the reverse mode. Everything
you've learned about the game is goes out the window. I got really
frustrated after a while on the reverse mode. (I almost broke my
controller because I slammed it on the floor in frustration.)
Replayability 6 out of 10
Like I said before, after you play this game once or twice, you quickly
get turned off by it. I don't play it anymore and I got it in January of '98.
This game is probably has worse replay value than any other N64 game.
Game Value 5 out of 10
One word: NOO!!!!! If you have very little money to spend don't get this
game. Even though the game now costs $40.00, it still is not worth it.
I don't understand why it was voted 16th best game ever in Nintendo
Power's 100 issue. Trust me, don't get this game.
Overall 5 out of 10
For the most part this game is bad. This game has practically no multiplayer
action. I believe every racing game should have a good multiplayer mode.
Also, you only race against only four other racers. This is a big drawback.
