Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Reviewed by Officer of the Elite Corps
If you have done the code that allows you to pilot the X-Wing and TIE
in Shadows of the Empire and wished you had more variety shipwise,
this game is for you. Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes
Back, Rogue Squadron tells the story about Luke Skywalker starting the
Elite Rogue Squadron to serve the Rebel Alliance. If you have always
wanted to know what it would be like pilot a X-Wing, Y-Wing, whatever,
look no further.
Graphics 9 out of 10
The scenery and graphics are incredible in this game. Even more so with
the Expansion Pak. The scenery does make you feel like you are there unlike
some of the other empty promises that other games make. And if you fly
too close to the ground, you can see the shadow and dust that your craft
leaves behind. The detail on the ships are surprisingly good. You can see
the grooves and the blasters and everything else.
Music and Sound 10 out of 10
With the original Star Wars soundtrack and other music from past Star Wars
games, the music will give you the feeling that you have to do this and that
and hype you to face the Empire alone. About the Sound, the voices do sound
like their movie counterparts although they could bother you while trying to
blow a Shield Generator. The laser sounds and craft sounds sound like their
respective craft and do sound at the right times.
Game Challenge 10 out of 10
Trust me on this one. At first, you might not think this is so challenging
(ie. Ambush at Mos Eisley 1st level) but as you progress in level and rank,
the game consistently challenges you to keep moving and to keep your head
cool in order to survive the heat of battle (ie. Liberation of Gerrard 5 5th
level). Expect not to beat this in one day or one week for that matter. People
are always asking for a challenging Nintendo 64 game. Well, here it is!
Rumble Pak 9 out of 10
You just try and play this with the Rumble Pak! Unless you have nerves of
steel, you won't last very long until you need to be taken to a hospital for
uncontrollable shaking! Especially with the Y-Wing as they have tough armor
but don't move very fast. Watch it with that thing all right?
Frustration
You will be frustrated. I guarantee it. Here's a little example. While the
Turbolasers will shot at you repeatedly, you still need to shoot down the
TIE Bombers and Intercepters before they pick off your ground troops. But
there is a choice here. You can shoot at the bombers which do more damage
but take longer to circle around or you can shoot the AT-PTs on the ground
which can deliver a steady stream of fire. Oh and one more thing. Don't fly
too close to the canyon or else homing missiles will pick you off like flies.
Either way, your commandos won't last very long... This is just an example
and if you can't handle this, you can never handle the 6th of 7th level and up.
Replayability 9 out of 10
You can keep playing and trying to find out the many hidden codes that still
remain unrevealed. You can also attempt to go for the Gold Medal on every
level to unlock hidden ships and missions. But without a multiplayer option,
this game feels like its missing something and subtracts the Replayability.
