Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Reviewed by Colin Healy
Star Wars Rogue Squadron is a 3-D type shooter along the lines of Star Fox.
The whole game is based on the first level of Shadows of the Empire, with
much bigger levels, better textures, more ships, more bad guys and better
sound effects. If you plan to buy Star Wars Rogue Squadron I suggest you
make use of the Expansion Pak, which gives the game better visuals, but
drops the framerate slightly.
Graphics 7 out of 10
The visuals of the crafts in this game are done very nicely, but there are
many little nagging problems. First off, the textures. The textures are boring
and bland, with each level having only one set. This makes the game look like
a first-generation game title. There is also quite a bit of that annoying
Nintendo 64 fog that lately was getting better as developers got used to
the Nintendo 64. However, what you can see is very crisp, especially with
the Expansion Pak. Explosions look kind of short and flat. Also, when your
ship is about to blow up it doesn't smoke like it did in Shadows of the
Empire, there is almost no warning of your immanent death.
Music and Sound 10 out of 10
Quite simple, the best music on the Nintendo 64 to date. With Factor 5
using a 15:1 compression rate, they managed to squeeze a ton of voice
into this game. The music is also quite impressive, with familiar Star
Wars tunes mixed in with new ones.
Game Challenge 7 out of 10
Beating the game is not very hard, however, what is hard is getting all
the medals, that is, beating certain times, killing lots of enemies, etc.
There is a lot of missions though, and when you beat them you can go
back and beat them with different crafts.
Game Value 7 out of 10
This game is worth the price, even though it is kind of easy. if you are a
Star Wars fan, get this game now. Be warned, though, it isn't as good as X
Wing vs. Tie Fighter. There isn't any multiplayer, which makes the replay
value go down.
Overall 7.5 out of 10
