Pilotwings 64
Reviewed by Jeff Lewis
Console flight sims are about as rare nowadays as a Nine Inch Nails song
without cusswords and blasphemy. The Pilotwings series (and it's TWO count
em TWO games) has always been regarded as the best of this genre.
Now, thanks in part to Shigeru-Sama, Paradigm Simulations (a government
contractee for Military flight sims), and "The Big N," Pilotwings 64
is born.
Remember the first Pilotwings? Ahh, those were the days. Back when
hideously pixelated "mode 7" graphics knocked our socks off. PW64 gives
the game a huge polygonal overhaul. Not to mention many, many new
vehicles.
Graphics:
GOOD: Awesome special effects in the water, and great textures.
BAD: The worst part? The game runs at a freakin' average of
15fps!!! You'll grind your teeth as the game skips from 15..to 30...to
60 frames per second, all of the time!!! It really screws your gameplay up.
Sound:
GOOD: VERY cool sound effects like missiles, traffic, and engines.
BAD: The music can only be described as ELEVATOR MUSIC FROM HELL!! Run
far away!!!
Gameplay:
It's like the real thing. 'Nuff said.
The Verdict:
In conclusion, I would have to say that this is a fairly mediocre game.
Sure, it has super-realistic flight controls and such, but the long term
playability just isn't there. This is the kind of game you rent, not buy.
Overall : 7 out of 10
