Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Reviewed by Warhero
I have been a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series for a long
time. I have loved every game except for Mortal Kombat 3
(not Ultimate). Mortal Kombat Trilogy was the last Mortal
Kombat game before the 3-D era of Mortal Kombat IV. Mortal
Kombat Trilogy is a game that contains every (or almost every)
aspect of Mortal Kombat I to Ultimate 3. Now, on with the review!
Graphics 6 out of 10
Nice visuals. Most of the backgrounds are nice, but I think
they put a couple of un-needed backgrounds. The Star Bridge
is just the Pit II with crappy stars and a moon. Come on! I am
glad the Pit is still here, but why did they have have to put the
crappy stars and a moon background again. What happened to
blue sky, moon, and clouds backgrounds. The bottom of the Pit
is now an accessible level, but they really, REALLY screwed up
here! I understand that in Mortal Kombat I, the bottom of the
Pit had some heads of the developers, but this is too much.
They have scattered blood, people that look like Scorpion, and
people that look like vampires. The characters look great, but
there are a lot of missing frames, causing major slowdowns. A
good example is when, in endurance, the first enemy dies and
the second enemy jumps into battle, and the game slows down
and there is a delay in between characters. The use of colors
are not as good as other Nintendo 64 games.
Music and Sound 3 out of 10
Ugly, UGly, UGLy, UGLY!!! All of a sudden, everybody likes Mortal
Kombat 3 music. Most of the stages use the Mortal Kombat 3
soundtrack that I hate so much. Only a couple of new, dumb
tracks have been added to the Mortal Kombat Trilogy soundtrack.
The voices are all of a sudden horrible! All of the guys sound the
same. Same with the girls. The only exception was Sheeva and
one other person (forgot the name).
Game Challenge 6 out of 10
The challenge depends. If the difficulty is set on Very Easy to
Medium, the enemies go into a "My turn, your turn" format
where the computer lets you hit him with an opener. I can only
play Hard to Very Hard to enjoy this. Even so, the enemies are
still sort of easy. Motaro is so easy (even on Very Hard)!! Shao
Kahn is so cheap. Pick someone that can duck under his flame balls.
Duck and he will dash at you. Jump and he will Shadow Uppercut
you and then Hammer you! Anything else you do he either taunts
or uses the fireball. The only person that can easily beat Shao Kahn
is Sub-Zero. Every time you freeze, he Shadow Uppercuts (only
thing is that you will be waiting with a handy uppercut). You can
do this ENDLESSLY and will not stop.
Game Play-Fun 4 out of 10
Midway and Williams, SHAME ON YOU! The Nintendo 64 Version is so
dumb! Mortal Kombat 3 Sub-Zero (Unmasked) is gone and Classic
replaced him with his and Unmasked's moves, making him so cheap!
Unlike the Playstation version, you cannot play as the classic
versions of some fighters OR play as the bosses. I checked out
the cheats (NOT GAME SHARK)......"WHERE THE beep IS ONE BUTTON
FATALITIES?!" That is the ONLY cheat I ever used (I hate buttoning
fatalities even though I memorize some of them) and now its
gone... Why are there 2 lines of rewards lists when you beat the
game? Most of them are stupid, endless endurance matches with
classic characters or pallate-swap ninjas (which leads to my next
topic!). The pallate-swap idea is horrible. I know that this has been
used to make ninjas without destroying much memory (its used in
all games on all versions). But in this game it is pallate-swap city.
Khameleon is the female version of Chameleon (male ninja that had
all powers of all pallate-swap male ninjas. He made good use of
pallate-swap, though). She has the powers of the female ninjas.
She doesn't change colors....her life bar name does (How stupid!).
The only fun multi player mode on this version is 3 on 3. If you win
8 Player Tournament, you can't even get the Supreme Demonstration.
This game just isn't as fun as the other versions...(sigh..)
Replayability 10 out of 10
I'm amazed! This is the only area where this gets a 10/10! With
the number of fighters, backgrounds, and multi player modes,
this game makes a great party game, even with all the flaws.
Overall 5 out of 10
If you only have a Nintendo 64, just rent it. If you like it so much (high hopes!),
then buy it. I know you are still going to buy this game no matter how
bad it is if you are a Mortal Kombat fan. I did. But soon I will get a
Playstation and buy the Playstation version. I hope you do. Good bye!
