Mortal Kombat 4
Reviewed by Chijioke Okafor
Mortal Kombat to my recognition was the first game to ever introduce blood into
its gameplay. That is just one of the factors that make this such an exceptional
game. The storyline of Mortal Kombat started years ago and has evolved since
then. Rayden is the thunder god and soul defender of the Earth Realm. Rayden, to
help defend earth from the evil terrorizing, he seeks help from the mortals on
earth. In Mortal Kombat Shang Tsung was the evil who planned to devour the
souls of all the mortals on earth for his master, who was shrouded in secrecy.
In Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 Tsung master, Shao Kahn, was the evil with intentios
to rule earth. Now, in part 4 the evil is Shinnok. Shinnok is a elder god who
wanted to control earth, because it would increase his power and make him
the most powerful god of all. Little did Shinnok know that Rayden was the
defender of Earth and upon his arrival they had a battle that plunged Earth into
darkness for many centuries. The thunder god Rayden came out victorious and
sent Shinnok to the Netherrealm in defeat(the Netherrealm is a place for
unwanted souls). Quan Chi, a sorcerer, freed Shinnok from his imprisonment
in the Netherrealm and formed a army to defeat the Army of Light (Rayden and
his warriors). Now the battle rages on again.
Graphics 10 out of 10
The graphics to this game is excellent. Unlike the other Mortal Kombats this game
lets you leave the 2D plane for the 3D one. If you liked how the characters looked
on GoldenEye for Nintendo 64, you will like the characters in Mortal Kombat 4. The
characters and are now polygonal and so is the background making the game seem
more like real life. Now what I really like about the graphics is the characters
ending cinemas. I mean compared to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, the endings was just a
picture and a bunch of scrolling words, which made use your imagination to figure
out how it probably went down. On Mortal Kombat 4 the cinemas blow any Mortal
Kombat endings out the water to oblivion. They so outrageous, you got to see it
to believe it.
Music and Sound 9 out of 10
The sounds to this game is excellent everything from the "hi yah!" to the crushing
of bones. One thing I like about this game is that you can hear the character clearly
also some of the sounds are funny. What I mean by funny for example is when you
throw your and some characters say, if you listen closely, "Boy I'm gonna throw
ya over there. If your character is being beat up the person might say,"Ah that
hurts!", " Oh my leg!", etc. Another sound that gamers know would be in the game
with no doubt is the "GET OVER HERE!"
Game Challenge 7 out of 10
I did not find this game to be over the edge difficult, do to the fact I beat it on
master 2 difficulty level medium in about 2 days. My little brother beat it Master
2 difficulty level ultimate in about four days. This was probably do to my experience
with Mortal Kombats so new gamers might just find it a little difficult compared
to the other versions of the games.
Game Play-Fun 9 out of 10
With array of different moves, characters, fatalities, and juggles this game is
extremely fun to play a thousand times. The fatalities are all bloody and nasty,
like Tanya neck breaker and Reptile face bites. There are also pit fatalities and
a new stage fatality in the fan stage. It just so cool to do, to watch you opponent
be spun around in 360 degrees spins and be hurled to a huge fan and be cut up is
pretty sweet. What also makes this game worthy to be replayed is the fact that
every in the game has some type of weapon which all have different capabilities,
for instance Sub-Zero's Ice Club and can freeze his opponent by pressing back and
low punch. To all the Mortal Kombaters out there the gameplay on this game is now
where as bad as the game play I experienced on Mortal Kombat Trilogy. What also
makes the game play better is the fact that there are not combos that take off
like 60% damage and if there is it is extremely hard to do.
Frustration
One thing I hated about the game is the fact that every time you turn off your system
and want to play again you to reconfigure your buttons, if you have no memory pak.
That is the only thing about the game I disliked, everything to my memory seemed all right.
Overall 9 out of 10
Overall I give this game a 9. It is very good game for a fourth sequel to the series.
If you plan to play this game with plans to experience a whole new game, prepare
to experience it. This is one game I recommend to gamers all around.
