Mario Kart 64
Reviewed by Tim FitzRandolph
I'd have to say Mario Kart 64 is about the most fun I've had with my N64
since Wave Race came out. But I think I'll have the give MK64 the nod for
best racing game because of its multiplayer features. But first, the rest
of the game.
GRAPHICS 9.8 out of 10
The graphics, although they didn't impress me at first, are incredible.
Although they're not as detailed as some may like, they are FAST!! And
they provide enough variety to make the game remain interesting. The only
exception to this rule is the Rainbow track, which looks cool in the screen
shots, but is too long for my taste. The characters and their karts look
flawless, despite the fact that they're sprites. Even in 4 player mode the
frame-rate is unbelievable, with no loss in detail. I much prefer simpler,
fast graphics over slow, detailed ones.
SOUND 9.7 out of 10
The music in this game, although not classic, fits the title well. Each
song for blends well with the mood for the track it represents. But the
sound effects are where the game really shines. Every character has a
recognizable voice, and the crash sounds are right on. The feeling you
get when your red shell slams an opponent into oblivion is incredible.
CONTROL 9.8 out of 10
Although it may seem slightly sluggish at first, once learned the control
is fantastic. Power-slides abound, especially on the ice levels.
MULTIPLAYER 9.9 out of 10
Wow. This is why I bought this game. Don't get me wrong, I love the 1
player mode [however unfair it is] but the 2,3,and 4 player modes are
incredible! 2 player VS. mode is extremely fast and entertaining, but the
game really rocks in 3 or 4 player mode. Personally me and my friends had
no trouble playing 4 player mode on a 15" television. Even though it was
small, it was well worth it. And now that my 40" TV is working again it'll
be even better. Although everyone seems to like the BATTLE mode most of
all, I tend to enjoy the multiplayer VS. battles. Making your move as you
come around the last bend to win is the most fun to me. But believe me
when I say the BATTLE mode is all its cracked up to be. The balloon idea is
fantastic.
OVERALL 9.9 out of 10
Although many people complain the tracks are too long, I disagree (with the
exception of Rainbow road, which IS too long) My personal favorite track
for VS races is Wario's stadium track. So although the 9.9 rating may seem
high, it really isn't. For what the game sets out to accomplish (fast,
fun, cartoonish racing), it delivers flawlessly. I say it's better than
Wave race only because I like the style of MK64 more than Wave race. But
overall, this game is a MUST HAVE for any racing/Mario/N64 fan. A truly
classic game.
