Extreme-G
Reviewed by Bob F.
Looking over Nintendo 64 games these days (fog, blurry
graphics, bad sound, etc.) I decided to rent this title before buying.
I went to my favorite video game rental store the day of release
And played the rental copy to "test the waters". Needless to say I
walked out of the store about 5 minutes later with my own copy. The
game is put together very well with nicely detailed graphics, and
hey, the music is actually pretty cool too! So here is the lowdown.
Sound: I was expecting the worst, and was very surprised to here
the nice techno-beat of Extreme-G. It reminded me of a title I played to
death on the Playstation called "Wipeout". The quality is good and sounds
clear. The sound of the bikes themselves had me drueling as I
accelerated and slowed down around sharp corners. Hmmm does anyone
remember the sound the bikes made on the movie TRON? That's what
they can compared to. And ohhhh the sound when those others pass you.
Graphics: The graphics are very well done, from the intro to the game
Play itself. I had read reviews from magazine critics saying they were
"blurry" and that there was too much "Pop-Up". Let me assure you, the
graphics look great when they are flying by you, and the fog is almost
un-noticeable. The effect is great, and actually got me a bit dizzy
on a few of the final tracks. I feel with the Extreme speed of the
game, one must expect a little pop-up and fog.
Control: The controls in this game are nice and tight. The analog
controls work very well with this game, as well as the button config.
Rather than give you what each button does, let me just say that if
you are not happy with the configuration of the buttons, you can
always change them to your liking.
Game Play: Game play is right on the money, and I can't tell you how
glad I was to see more than 1 or 2 other players on the screen at
once. (This was one of my gripes with Top Gear Rally) The computer
racers are tough, but never unfair. I also found a very good number
of tracks in this game, and the only seem to get better the further
you get into the game. Multiple paths were also a nicely added touch,
and I found myself exploring each of them to find which one was easiest
and quickest.
This game is a definite buy, and if you like really fast, multi-player
racing games, then pick this one up! Oh! If you decide to use the
cockpit view and play with all the lights out in the room, you might
not want to play this game on a full stomach!
