Trojan
Reviewed by Larcen Tyler
Back in the heyday of Players choice-10 machines (for those who don't know,
Players choice-10 was an arcade unit that had up to 10 NES games stockpiled in
at once. Players used coins to buy time to play.) Me and my dad always used to go
over to the convenience store and, while he shopped, I would play the games.
When Trojan stepped in, it appealed to me. Back then, I had been playing Kung Fu,
and the system seemed to have a similar thing. The grey guys took one hit,
projectile throwers took two, bosses with their own energy bars at the end, etc.
etc. I was immediately taken in by it's nice graphics, good control, and the fact
it had a 2p vs. mode!
Graphics 4.5 out of 5
Sure it's just NES, but these graphics are nice! The backgrounds are nice, with
things like demolished buildings, torches, statues, and crumbling walls. The fourth
level, however, could use some touch ups. Aside from that little gripe, the graphics
are nice!
Music and Sound 3 out of 5
The music is somewhat inspired, but not all that great. First you hear the intro, then
the same chorus plays over and over. The clangs and thuds are nice, but they could have
sounded a little better than that. Sure it's only '87, but still!
Game Challenge 5 out of 5
Definitely a challenge here! Beginners may only make it to the second area of level
one, while seasoned gamers will probably get from level 2 to level 3. That's how
tough the game is! Partially because you have to learn to use your shield as well as
your sword, which only adds to the challenge, making it better. Fortunately, Capcom
generously added a continue code for those who have difficulty with this game. (Up & Start)
Game Play-Fun 5 out of 5
You'll have plenty of fun here as you battle through the various levels hacking and
slashing those soldiers. And if that gets boring, then take a friend on in the versus mode.
Frustration
Definitely frustration here! The bosses can be a real pain in the neck even if you know
how to use shield properly! And if you think the first two levels are tough, wait until
you get to level 3, where they're throwing everything but the kitchen sink at you!
Replayability 4 out of 5
You may think that you can ace this once you start, but be warned, this is not easy,
even for professionals! Be prepared for lots of frustration and replay as you try to
beat the big bad bosses of each level! And if you get too frustrated, take out your
frustration on another friend in vs. mode
Game Value 5 out of 5
I got Trojan for $1.49 at Funcoland, a very good price! It's hard to find, but if you do,
then pick it up. You'll have plenty of fun, despite the frustration you may encounter.
Overall 5 out of 5
I haven't played this game since the Playerschoice-10 Era! Now that I finally have it,
I'm overjoyed, but frustrated still! That guy with the morning star keeps killing me
over and over! Just another reason to play it again!
