Tetris 2
Reviewed by I-Am-Lander
Tetris 2 is, well, the sequel to Tetris. In this game, the pieces were
1 of 3 colors. You had to line these colors up, 3 in a row. One of
those 3 had to be (Or should have been to move on) a "Bomb" block.
If you removed a flashing "Bomb" block, you took out all "Bomb"
blocks of that color. Interesting.
Graphics 6 out of 10
The graphics had been improved slightly from the first Tetris.
The blocks are all 1 color now (In other words the colors don't
change between levels..some of the colors in the first Tetris
were downright irritating.), and they look as good as they ever
did (Which isn't saying much). Also, the background is kind of
impressive if you stop to look away from the actual game for a
minute. Lastly, the cinema scenes you get for clearing certain
levels are pretty nice.
Music and Sound 5 out of 10
The music is more mellow than the first Tetris, but it doesn't
have the coolness of The Nutcracker. In fact, it gets downright
annoying after awhile. Thankfully you can turn it off. The sound
effects consist pretty much of the effects when you turn your
Tetrads, and when pieces actually hit the ground.
Game Challenge 10 out of 10
I'm happy to say, that as with the first Tetris, it starts out easy.
"This is simple!" you're saying to yourself. Soon, however, it gets
faster. Suddenly, game over! Oh yeah, and did I mention that you
can play against the computer too? You'd better be on your game,
though, because the computer doesn't make many mistakes, even
on easy!
Replayability 8 out of 10
For whatever reason, this game isn't as addicting as the first Tetris.
Still, 30 levels * 3 speeds = 90 levels you have to play through.
Playing against the computer will also up the replay value some.
And there's finally a 2-player mode! That's right, you and a
friend can go against each other and try to destroy each other
by burying them in blocks! Neat!
Control 7 out of 10
The pieces respond well to rotation and all, but one of the best
new features--new Tetrads--is also one of the biggest problems.
There are some Tetrads, but they aren't all one piece. When the
main piece lends, you can still maneuver the remaining pieces.
However, these pieces don't always move in sync with each other.
Also, the new interface that requires lining up colors, much like
Dr. Mario, creates many more chances for stupid mistakes.
Overall 7 out of 10
Now I may not be a puzzle game person, but I have to say the first
Tetris is one of the greatest games of all time, and it would be
impossible to duplicate it. Elorg did a nice job of making a new
gaming experience for Tetris Addicts, while still keeping familiar
elements of the 1st Tetris. All in all, it's not a bad game, and if you
liked Tetris or Dr. Mario, you'll probably like this too. Buy it if you're
a fan of puzzle games.
