Tecmo World Wrestling
Reviewed by Joey
This wrestling game by Tecmo has 10 wrestlers to choose from, and some good
moves to do once you get used to the controls. It's also unique because it has an
commentator at the bottom of the screen, saying things about the match. After
playing it for 3 years, I still occasional notice him saying something new. When
someone's energy level is low, it shows a close-up view when someone does a
special move.
Graphics 8.5 out of 10
The graphics in the close-up view are really good. Most of the wrestlers look about
the same in the ring, just with different colors, but that's not surprising. And since
this game is from Tecmo, you get to see some typical Tecmo cinematic scenes
towards the end.
Music and Sound 7.5 out of 10
The most annoying aspect of the music in this game, is in 2 player mode when the
song never changes. In one player mode it changes after every 3 matches that you
win. It's composed pretty good, and the later music reminded me of Ninja Gaiden.
The sound effects are good. To access the sound mode, hold Up + Left + A + B and press
select on the title screen.
Game Challenge 9 out of 10
This is pretty hard from the beginning, and gets even harder as you go on. You fight
all the wrestlers in a predetermined order, and when you lose a match they send you
back to wrestler before the one who beat you. Not to mention that when you lose a
match it says LOSER in huge letters just to tantalize you.
Game Play-Fun 8 out of 10
As with almost all sports games, playing this game in 2 player mode is great fun.
In my opinion this is the best wrestling game on the NES, if not the best wrestling
game ever (besides Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium).
Frustration
When you are fighting the final boss, every time you lose you have to go back to the
wrestler before him, and you can lose and then get sent back further, and so on. You
have to press the buttons very fast and you will be tired after fighting a few matches.
Replayability 7 out of 10
Since this game is difficult to beat, you probably won't get sick of seeing the ending
any time soon. And you get to rename the wrestlers! That's an interesting bonus. Too
bad it doesn't save the names.
Game Value 10 out of 10
I got this game used with instructions and the box for $10, and that was an excellent
deal. I would especially recommend you track this one down if you have someone to
fight against, because 1 player mode gets boring eventually.
Overall 9 out of 10
This game has excellent graphics and sound, and is a lot of fun to play. It has to be
the best wrestling game on the NES. Most of the games in the genre were of substandard
quality, but not this one. If you want to slam your best friend's head into a turnbuckle,
then track this game down.
