Tecmo NBA Basketball
Reviewed by Dan Myer
This is a review for Tecmo NBA Basketball for the NES. This was
probably the first basketball game which utilized all the NBA teams.
In this game, there is a season mode, which allows you to control any
number of teams for a season that keeps statistics, as well as an
all-star game, and preseason games.
Graphics: 7 out of 10
At that time, these graphics were above average for the NES. Each
team's stadium looks different. On the negative side, in the game,
5'3 Ty Bogues and 7'7 Manute Bol look the same. Another problem
is everybody looks like they're running with unisuits on. The game
also has a few cinemas during the game, like the tip-off, jams etc.,
but since there is a lack of variety, they get boring after a while.
Music and Sound: 9 out of 10
The music is very catchy. I found myself humming along with the
background music as I was playing. The songs are mellow, upbeat,
and simple. The sound, however is terrible. When the crowd cheers,
it sounds like static. And whenever you steal or pass the ball, there
is cartoonist effects. I also found that when the crowd cheers, every
other sound becomes indistinguishable.
Game Challenge: 4 out of 10
If you're looking for a difficult game, look someplace else. The first
time I played this game on expert mode, I won by about 20. This game
is very easy. I got frustrated because I couldn't get a close game. If
you can't cream this game after you're third try, you should take a
long walk on a short pier.
Game Play-Fun: 7 out of 10
After a while, the only thing that is fun with this game is mashing
either the computer or you're friend. It is dignifying to go 82-0 and
have the best stats. This game is best played with a friend so you can
actually get some decent competition.
Replayability: 5 out of 10
If you have a friend to play this game with, it'll have a lot of replayability,
but if want to play this game alone, the replayability is low because of
the lack of challenge.
Game Value: 9 out of 10
This game kept me entertained for about a week at a time, but for $.99,
a week at a time isn't that bad. I would probably buy this game for 10$,
so this game is a great bargain if you can find it. I bought my copy at FuncoLand.
Overall: 8 out of 10
This is a great game for a beginner at video games, but if you want a
game that will keep you on the edge of you're seat the entire time,
rent, don't buy, first.
