Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
Reviewed by Zombie Mario
In 1985, Nintendo stunned America as it proved with Super Mario Bros. that
there is a market for video games. America sat back and whispered
that the Japanese company will fall hard on its back just like Atari,
who had shattered years before like glass falling from a skyscraper.
Nintendo kept rolling, though, with classics like Pac-Man, Paperboy,
Metroid, SMB3, Legend of Zelda, and Duck Hunt.America woke up, and
realized the dawn of a new era was upon them. When Nintendo was really
famous, they thought about combining two games into one. Thus, Mario
Bros./Duck Hunt surfaced. This game is one of the oldest Nintendo games ever.
Graphics: A+
As one of the first Nintendo video games, Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
revolutionized graphics for the NES. Super Mario Bros., being the first video
game, is now the building blocks for today's games. Duck Hunt has superb
graphics. I am amazed that two games with such fine done graphics can
be fit into a singe cartridge.
Music and Sound: B+
The SMB soundtrack is great, but it is missing variety. There is only three
tunes in the game. Despite that, SMB has lots of great sound effects. Duck
Hunt has only a few sound effects and one tune, but otherwise it fits the game.
Game Challenge: A
Many gamers will find the earlier levels easy and the later levels hard
in SMB. The later levels are like the earlier levels only they have more
enemies and tough jumps. The castles from 4-4 to 6-4 are exact copies
of castles 1-4 to 3-4 only adding more rotating fireballs. In 7-4 and 8-4
you have to take an exact route to Bowser, making these the most annoying
levels. Duck Hunt is easy in game A, where you shoot one duck. Game B and
game C are harder because you shoot at two targets instead of one.
Replayability: A-
SMB is repayable because it is a challenge to beat every level from 1-1
to 8-4 in one sitting. It is also a challenge to find the three warp zones
and -1-1. Duck Hunt is not always hard unless you play game B or C. Game
A is relatively easy even when the duck starts to fly fast.
Game Value: A
This game is definitely worth the $$$$ because it's 2-in-1. The only game
that could be worth more $$$$ is Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/Track because
it's a 3-in-1. A game doesn't need to be a 3-in-1 to be great. Mario Bros./Duck
Hunt proves that.
Overall: 9.5 out of 10
Overall, this game is one of best classics (along with Zelda, Metroid, and
SMB3) to date. The game has superb graphics, music, and challenge. The game
also has a chockful of goodies to find. This is a must have game for NES owners.
