Super Mario Bros. 2
Reviewed by Joel Lehman
Super Mario 2, the second in the famous Mario Bros. series. (actually third,
after the original Mario Bros. game, which actually involved no scrolling),
is to say the least, different. It is very, very different from either Mario
1 or 3, which are kind of similar. This one, you throw vegetables, use
magic potions & pows, and many other weird things. This is not bad,
however, and makes the game interesting.
Graphics A-
The graphics are very colorful, and are a big improvement over Super
Mario 1. Also, now you can scroll vertically & horizontally, not only
horizontally, which changes gameplay a little bit, but most of your
scrolling is still going to be horizontal.
Music and Sound A-
Music is not too memorable, typical video game fare. It sounds a little
bit better than super mario 1, but I believe that super mario 3 improves
on 2 a little bit. Sound is fairly good, with a good explosion for using
the rocket, and throwing vegetables, and hitting baddies.
Game Challenge A
I never finished this game, even using the warps that are not-to-cleverly
hidden throughout the game. Some of the levels just get too hard. This
is not a good thing, because I like to be able to get what I paid for out of
a game, and when you can't finish it, well, you don't get your money's
worth. On the other side, I am not an expert gamer, and you might have
more luck than me.
Game Play-Fun A
What makes this game fun is the variety of characters you can play as.
Princess Toadstool can levitate, Luigi has a high jump, and Mario is
pretty well rounded. Toad is in there too, I think he's the strongest or
something. Anyways, this game is pretty fun. The levels are different
and varied, and the bosses are too. From the bomb rat to the egg spewing
what ever he is.
Frustration
This game really wasn't very frustrating. A few of the levels are really
hard, but they would be beatable to a better game-player than I. It's really
not that bad.
Replayability B
I'm not sure how many times you can play this until it gets boring, but it
takes awhile. I wish that more of these games would have put a password
feature in, instead of continues. You have to play the same levels over and
over again when you restart, and that makes it very annoying. Asides from
that, you can play this game quite a few times before it bores you to death.
Game Value A
NES games are now really good buys, usually only a couple dollars per
game. I would recommend this game only because it's so cheap, and is
part of a classic series that still is going on today on the n64. I think
anyone with an NES and a bit of spare time should get some of the games
in the mario series.
Overall A
Just because of the price, I think that this game is a good buy, if you can
find a used video game place somewhere around where you live. It's a good
game, and I think that you'd enjoy it. The graphics and sound are good, and
most of all, it's really cheap.
