Qix
Reviewed by Joan Class
Reminiscent of the old Atari version of Qix, this game is much
more challenging. You must avoid not only the flying Qix but also
two little buzzing things that follow the lines you draw and also
the outside border from the beginning of the game. If you are good
enough, you can advance to higher levels and earn even more points
if you split the 2 Qix; that is to separate them from each other
with the lines you draw. Your lines, if not completed will burn like
a fuse and destroy you if the burning end reaches you before you
complete the line.
Graphics 2 out of 10
I only give the graphics a 2 because there are better graphics in
some NES games than this. Qix, however can be forgiven for the
weakness in the graphical design for it's challenge in getting an ever
higher score. I would not recommend this game to beginners; learn
your controls first and then play Qix. You need to be fast to avoid
the hazardous flying Qix and those little buzzing things that
follow you around
Music and Sound 5 out of 10
This game gets a medium score for music and sound because, again,
there are NES games with better music and sound effects. I can
also forgive the slight weakness in the sound effects as many
times I turn the sound off while playing Nintendo games whether or
not I care for the Music and sound effects in deference to the rest
of my family.
Game Challenge 8 out of 10
I have played few games more challenging than this one. It is
downright addicting and I would probably play it more than others.
I say probably because Qix is a fairly new addition to my NES collection
and some of the ones I've had longer, I still have not played.
Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10
Qix rates right up there with my favorite video games, giving
competition to even the Dragon Warrior series as being my single
favorite game to play. I have seem few games that I can play for
as long as this and not be bored stiff. The challenge in avoiding the
hazards in this game goes a long way toward making it replayable
for a long time to come.
Replayability 10 out of 10
I keep returning to this game again and again. It has the challenge
and tolerable graphics and sound. It is also very fun and as I have
said, quite addicting. I have to say that playing Qix yet again is as
much fun the second (third, fourth, ten-thousandth) time around as
the first, maybe more so because as you improve in skill (and, hence
score higher) it is more gratifying on subsequent plays than the first time.
Game Value 10 out of 10
As to total value Qix is one of the highest-rated of the NES games
I own. It is quite worth the price it sells for, if not even worth a
higher amount. The replayability factor makes it worth more than
some of the other games because Qix is a little different each time
you play. It is not, like some of the other NES games one that
replays exactly the same each time.
Overall 45 out of 60
Though not, as I have said, a good beginner's game, once you are
past being a novice NES player, it is a very good challenge, even
for an experienced video game player. Since the replay is not
exactly the same as the first time you play this game, it is a
worthwhile investment for most NES players, replayablility
being quite high.
