Marble Madness
Reviewed by Chris Rothenberger
Marble Madness is a marble race game. The goal is simple: Finish the track in the
time allotted. However, the game is more challenging than that thanks to some great
course layout and a nice assortment of deadly obstacles.
Graphics 7 out of 10
The graphics in this game are quite nice, much nicer than the standard fare for
Nintendo games (and better than some SNES games!) The marbles look like marbles
they even have little bubbles inside them that move according to how the marble
moves. The background are colorful and designed to enhance depth perception, which
helps because you need to know whether that place is a pit or a rail!
Music and Sound 7 out of 10
The music is good for this kind of game (except in the first level), and only two of
them constantly repeat. The intensity of the music increases as you get to tougher
levels and complement the game play perfectly. There aren't very many sound effects,
only two that I can count. The marble screams when it falls, and it's not too bad. When
you reach the goal, a little ditty from the second music plays, and it's a nice way to
signal a finish.
Game Challenge 9 out of 10
Don't let the levels deceive you you don't have enough time. The first two levels are
extremely simple. When you get to the third level, you'll start having troubles.
Beginner's will probably lose on this one until they get the hang of the wave machine
near the end. On the level afterwards is where you'll probably be stuck for a while. And
if you manage to finish the Ultimate race without cheating, then you probably deserve
to brag to your friends. The last two levels are almost impossible, especially the last
section of the Ultimate race!
Game Play-Fun 8 out of 10
You'll have a hayday with this. Since there are no passwords, you'll have to try all
over again every game. It helps, though, because you carry the time that you had left
over to the next level, so the faster you beat this one...
The controls are great. If you choose 90° movement (which I recommend) the marble
will move smoothly and quickly to where you want it.
Frustration
After the game's over, you'll probably be going "Is this IT?" The ending leaves much
to be desired, and there are too few levels. If the company had made a few more levels,
this game would be even better.
Replayability 8 out of 10
You'll be replaying this a lot before you complete it, but even after that you'll be
trying to better your times on every level. It's kinda addictive that way. Even after
you've beaten it 6-7 times, you'll probably pop it in occasionally, just to see how
you can still do.
Game Value 7 out of 10
I would defiantly recommend this game for anyone interested in buying it. It'll keep
them busy trying to win for a few years.
Overall 7.5 out of 10
Overall, I'd say this company did well in the game. Although adding more levels
would be a blessing, what's in there may keep you entertained for longer than
you're willing to admit! One final Note: if you're an expert at these games, don't
get it. You'll beat it too quickly.
