The Mafat Conspiracy: Golgo 13 2

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by EniGmA Mafat Conspiracy is the sequel to an awesome game for the NES, Golgo 13. The first installment in the series basically featured bland side-scrolling action and some variety thrown in, but had an excellent storyline that more than made up for the flaws, and as the player ventured through the game, the plot became even better. Now, the sequel was made in hopes to continue the non-stop action and plot that the first game had. Well, did it? Let's see......

Graphics 8 out of 10

There really isn't anything special here in the animation department, but the detail is excellent, and the cut-scenes that show you the story as it progresses have been greatly improved over the previous installment. VERDICT- SEQUEL IS BETTER

Music and Sound 7 out of 10

Most of the game's music was average, with the exception of the very first and last levels, which I loved. However, most of the other music is incredibly repetitious. The sound is okay, considering it's done on the NES. The original game had much more suspenseful music, but the tunes weren't quite as good as this one. VERDICT- SEQUEL IS BETTER

Game Play-Fun 7 out of 10

Rather than exploring levels like in its predecessor, Mafat Conspiracy is very linear. There is not much variety within the side-scrolling levels, simply shoot and jump, and the 3-D maze levels are even worse than the original, which makes it very annoying. There are some racing segments which are very nice, and you even get to snipe your enemies from a distance, which is done realistically. Aside from the new features, the basic premise is not executed the way it should have been. However, the game's saving grace is once again, its excellent storyline, which always keeps the player from putting down the controller; I always wanted to see what was going to happen next. VERICT- TIE

Frustration

The Mazes stink. End of story.

Storyline 8 out of 10

Since this is the game's best feature, I'd might as well review it. In-game cinemas are done very nicely, perhaps even rivaling those of Ninja Gaiden. Although much better looking than the original, there are fewer cut-scenes in the sequel. The original game sported over 40 in-game cinemas! Although as good as the original's, there aren't enough cut scenes to rival Golgo 13:Top Secret Episode. VERDICT- ORIGINAL IS BETTER

Overall 7.9 out of 10

Overall, if you liked the first game, then you'll probably like this one too. If you haven't played and Golgo 13 game, though, give this a try. You may like it.
