Kid Kool
Reviewed by SizzleSword
Kid Kool was a strange game by Vic Tokai. It was about a kid that
had to deliver 8 mystery herbs to the king in order for him to survive.
It's just a platform game, so there isn't really much of a challenge
once you know what to do.
Music and Sound 8 out of 10
Just regular NES music here. You'll sometimes hear a little 'beep' or
'bop bop' now and then, but you must live with that if you play NES games
a lot. I like the title screen theme... It's easily one of the best
themes of the game.
Game Challenge 9 out of 10
If you've played a platformer before, you shouldn't have any major problems
with this game. One thing that makes it hard is that if you want to get
certain powerups or bonuses, you have to run really fast, and there's usually
a lot of enemies around. Another thing is if you're not running fast and you
jump, you won't jump very far at all. Something that makes this game
even a little bit easier is this little thing that Kid Kool finds called a
Wicky or a Hicky. It stays on your back, and you can throw it at enemies,
and it kills them whenever it hits them.
Game Play-Fun 7 out of 10
Just like Mario, you have a number of lives, and sometimes you'll get a
continue. The bad thing is, the first level gets real annoying, and you have
to play it each time you feel like playing the game. If you liked Mario or
any other platform game, this should be pretty good.
Frustration
There's some really large gaps of water in this game, and if you fall in
them, you lose a life, and start over. You'll have to get a long running start
and then jump to get over the pit. Kid Kool runs REALLY fast, and sometimes
you'll bump into an enemy that you couldn't even see. The last thing is that
you can't go back. So, if you see a large gap, you can't turn around and go
back to get a running start. You'll have to lose a life, and just kind guess
where the pit will be.
Replayability 6 out of 10
The only reason I gave it this score is because of the first stage. It's so
annoying... They should have added some type of password feature just so
you wouldn't have to do this stage anymore. If you didn't have to play the
first stage every time, it would probably be more replayable.
Game Value 10 out of 10
I bought this game at Funcoland for about $1.50. I think it was worth the
price, because I did have some fun with it (except that first stage, wooo).
This is a rare game... Funcoland only had one copy of it, and I've never
seen it before then (besides when I rented it from Blockbuster about 7
years ago). So, if you see it, you should check it out... It's not a
bad game to have in your collection, for it's price.
Overall 8 out of 10
Well, it's just an average platformer, but you probably will like to find
out all of the secret powerups and things hidden in each level (you have
to jump everywhere, all of the hidden blocks are just hidden). There's
really nothing else to compare it to... Except for the graphics and style.
It's basically like Mario 1 there.
