Kid Icarus
Reviewed by Eric
In Kid Icarus, you play as the Hero, Icarus, in his attempt to kill harpies,
flying eyeballs, lions, eggplant wizards, and all sorts of other various
meanies until you can find and kill Medusa. It is a great game, one
which I still play to this day (replay value is a DEFINITE 10 out of 10).
Some stages are upwards scrolling, some are side scrolling, and some
(the labyrinths at the end every level) go in all directions. This is one
of my favorite NES games of all time if you're thinking of picking it up,
do it.
Graphics 9 out of 10
This game was released back in the day, and although you'd scoff at
graphics like this on a Playstation, this game has graphics better
than almost anything Nintendo put out for the NES (games like SMB 3
still beat it, but SMB 2 doesn't come close). The textures are clear
and varied, the enemies are well defined, and the previously-mentioned
eggplant wizards well you can imagine what they look like, and what
they do to you. (hint: they turn you into a kind of vegetable. Guess what it is.)
Music and Sound 7 out of 10
Again, it's great. The only problem is, it gets repetitive. The same sound
effect for every shot, the same sound effect for every hit, regardless
of what enemy it is, and similar music for every level. Although it is
catchy and goes very well with the game, a little bit more variation
would be nice. It doesn't surpass SMB 2 in this respect although the
music is at first better, the variety in SMB 2 keeps that above Kid Icarus.

Wow, is this game tough. Unless you use these passwords at the password screen

Good luck, cause you're gonna need it. It's not one of those annoying
games where you can't even get past the first level without codes
(read: Ikari Warriors), but once you get up to 1-3 or so, you'll start
feeling the pressure (there are 13 boards: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-1,
2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, and 4-1, a HUGE board in which
you'll fight Medusa at the end).
Game Play-Fun 9 out of 10
The enemies, the controls (watch for mishaps here, you might accidentally
jump off a sandbar while simply trying to duck, and trying to get just a
little bit further than last time make this a game you don't want to
miss out on. One of the best ever, in my opinion.
Frustration
HIGH! There is one kind of pedestal, where if you duck, you drop down.
This is useful for avoiding enemies, but if you forget, and you are near
the bottom of the screen and do this, bye bye! Plus, there's only one life,
no MARIO x 3 or anything like that in this game. If you die, you start over
at the beginning of the board you were on. (you do get to keep all of your
stuff though).
Replayability 10 out of 10
For all the reasons I've already said. They make the game!
Game Value 10 out of 10
So long as you can get it for $15 (I'm serious) dollars or less. You shouldn't
have trouble, it's a common game.
Overall 9 out of 10
A great game, you don't wanna miss out. If you can find it (don't buy it
from Funcoland if you can help it, they're rip-off artists). It's worth buying
another NES if you have to get this game.
