Goonies II
Reviewed by CAS
I still remember seeing The Goonies for the first time. I also remember
playing this game in arcades before I ever got a Nintendo. It's always been
my favorite game and always will be.
Music and Sound 10 out of 10
I thought the music in this game was fabulous. Although only loosely
based on the movie, it carries tunes such as Goodenuf written by Cyndi
Lauper and 8 Arms 2 hold U by The Goon-Squad (both featured in the
movie). The similarity between the songs in the movie and the game
are striking to say the least. Well, at least for a game made in 1987.
Graphics 6 out of 10
Like I said, this game was great, for 1987. But we've seen the full
potential of the Nintendo in games such as Kirby's Adventure. The
animation in this game is great, including object placement/movement
and character motions.
Play Control 4 out of 10
I found the play control to be poor in this game. Mikey's jumping makes
no sense to me, how he can jump half way across the screen in one
direction but can't turn around never made sense to me. Also, the hit
detection with the boomerang and sling shot was a bit off, and trying
to aim molotive cocktails is a challenge.
Fun/Challenge/Entertainment Value 10 out of 10
Although not following the plot of the movie very well, this was based
on a completely different story line. I would have preferred the option of
playing as any character but it just wasn't there. Fans of the movie will
enjoy seeing landscapes from the film and such, and the music will blow
fans away. It's predecessor, labeled simply "Goonies" (a rom on the Japanese
import cart. labeled "110 GAME CART USA"), followed the movie exactly. I
just wish since the sequel was available to the general public, the original
should have been also. It's not impossible to find, but it is difficult.
Overall Game Play (average of all scores) 7.5 out of 10
The only poor quality in this game is it's poor hit detection/play control.
In the Goonies I cart listed above, the game play was the same as Mario I,
just slightly better than Goonies II. It seems that almost every
movie-based game never lives up to the film's reputation, though.
All in all, this game was fabulous.
