Golf
Reviewed by Taliesin
Although it is an early rendition of grabbing the clubs and heading out
for a day on the green, NES' Golf has paved the way for future games
with this debut. Mario decides that the high-lifestyle of saving kingdoms
is enough for one weekend, and decides to go for a quick game at the local
golf course.
Graphics: 5 out of 10
The graphics look fairly decent, being that there is a small window
used for positioning Mario/Mario's Club in relation to the ball, and
another course window relating the overall anticipated direction that
the ball will travel en route to the green. Couple the two displays with
options for club size, swing strength, swing arch, and the factor of wind direction.
Music and Sound: 1 out of 10
It has sound? Oh, you mean sound effects! Riiiight... If you consider sound
effects to be the hum of your golf ball when hit, the sound of a ball landing
out of bounds or in the lake, then sure. Otherwise it's, Shhhh! Quiet on the
course please!
Game Challenge: 8 out of 10
The mail challenge here is in getting your stroke value to be under par, as
most of the courses test both your trajectory and your patience, as well
as your all-around knowledge of Golf as a sport. It is also challenging
enough to sit through all 18 holes of a match without turning the game off.
Game Play-Fun: 3 out of 10
The first five courses are great, but without the sound, the game lacks
a little of it's luster, and you may have to resist the urge to chuck the
game out of your window. But do not despair! If you are up to the challenge
of mucking your way through all 18 holes, I suggest that you plug in a
stereo for some background music. Either that, or attempt to outplay the
high score (or low score in this case), for the fewest number of strokes
in a game.
Frustration
The lack of music, coupled with the pin-piont putting green inaccuracy
lend me to believe that this game was created by some demented bastard
over at Nintendo as a torture device for all Golf aficionados out there.
But then again, I can't wait to get home and try to beat my lowest course score!
Overall: 4 out of 10
If you like playing the sport, don't bother with this game, but take to
the course for a few rounds of the real thing. However, if you enjoy
playing what could be considered the debut of this sports game for most
systems to build their games upon its template, go on ahead...But don't say
I didn't warn you!
