Gauntlet
Reviewed by Larcen Tyler
If you are expecting an 8 bit conversion of the arcade version, then you may
be disappointed yet somewhat pleased at the same time. It's not a total
conversion of the arcade version with features of it's own that are original,
making it an Action/RPG.
Graphics 4 out of 5
It's 8 bit, but the graphics are still good nevertheless! The animation and
movements are still the same, and the crumbling walls are a lot easier to
spot than they were in the arcades. The only complaint I have is how the
monsters don't darken as they take damage.
Music and Sound 4 out of 5
Gauntlet still retains the familiar sounds of your shots hitting monsters,
magic bombs being invoked, and hand-to-hand combat has never sounded
better. Another plus is how your characters groan as they take damage. My
only complaint wound wise is the music. It's boring and forgettable.
Game Challenge 5 out of 5
You must play through 80 looooooong rooms trying to find secret pieces
of the combination to the vault where the Sacred Orb is being held. The
programmers included a password system with the game that saves your
progress after each treasure room, stats and all. Expect a lot of playing
time with this that will be well worth your time!
Game Play-Fun 5 out of 5
There is no four-player support naturally, but you can still play two players
using normal or custom built characters. Plus you can play as the same
character, making things a lot more fun for those long multiplayer quests.
Frustration
Sometimes, shooting at the monsters can be sooooooo repetitive! Sometimes
you just want to barge through their bashing every monster you see in
hand-to-hand combat, well knowing how ghosts sap your strength! This is why
two players are better than one!
Replayability 5 out of 5
Whether it's one or two players, you're bound to enjoy some gaming time
with this game, namely because you won't have to reach into your pockets
to pull out change every time your character runs low on health!
Game Value 4 out of 5
Flaws aside, Gauntlet is well worth it's price of about $4 at most used video
game stores, but not for the fact that it's so hard to find! If you want this
game, then look hard, but be prepared for a great game!
Overall 5 out of 5
Overall, if you can find Gauntlet, get over the flaws, and would actually
enjoy a different type of Gauntlet, then play this. It's at a good price and
it's got good features for such an old game!
