Friday the 13th
Reviewed by Matt Hughes
What do you think when you hear the words Friday the 13th? Doom? Danger?
Jason? I think of one damn fine game for NES. This game is undoubtably one
of the NES classics due to its graphics, replayability, and challenge. Read
on, good fellow.
Graphics 9 out of 10
Geez, the graphics on this game are really good! Despite a few pixels, the
characters look relatively real. Well, come on. Its Nintendo. Bear with me.
Jason looks creepy in his hockey mask and blue jumper, and the characters
each have distinct faces. An overall victory.
Music and Sound 7 out of 10
Though the theme song is sufficiently creepy, given the games title and
subject matter, the rest of the games music (if there is any I wasn't listening)
is flat and uninspiring. the sounds are good, though.
Game Challenge 11 out of 10
The game is sometimes a little too challenging. There are many quest to
complete at once (Light all the campfires, capture Mrs. Voorhee's head,
upgrade weapons, and chase Jason), and undoubtably, when you are trying
to complete one quest, Jason will show up at the other end of the camp
and start slaughtering campers, prompting an annoying beep to sound for
about one minute. If your lucky, you will get there to rescue the campers,
and vanquish Jason for about one day. In the worst-case scenario, If you
get there at all, There will only be about 7 campers left, and then Jason
will kill one of your six characters, if he hasn't killed one of them in a camp
cabin. the weapons they give you are pretty uninspiring, too. Unless you get
an axe or something, it is pretty hard trying to wax Jason Voorhees with a
rock or a knife. The locales are also hard to navigate. If you are as unlucky
as I am, you will get stuck in the woods or in a cave. They are impossible
to get out of once you get in, and Jason will then pick the time to attack
half-way across the lake. Sometimes, he will pop right out as you are
walking along the road, and will promptly kill you.
Game Play-Fun 8 out of 10
As I said, the challenge of the game can detract from the fun, but it is
pretty cool to run around surreal camp Crystal Lake and try to complete
various tasks. The zombies are pretty funny looking! They pop right out of
the ground, and look like big, shaggy yellow things. Oh, yeah, have fun
getting out of the woods!
Frustration
ARRGH! This is one of the most frustrating games I have ever played! As I
said in the challenge paragraph, Jason Is very hard to kill, and picks the
worst time to mess with the campers. If you get an axe or something,
though, he can be kind of easy to kill, but that doesn't make his timing
any better.
Replayability 7 out of 10
Once you beat this game, you probably won't be motivated enough to play
it again. But if you are, have fun turning the game off!
Game Value 10 out of 10
However much you payed for it (I wouldn't know, I got it as a gift), I'm sure
its worth it! The game is huge and hard (heeheehee). Defiantly worth the
time to download the rom off the net, I think.
RPG 5 out of 10
Despite the greatness of the game, It would be better if there was more RPG
elements here. There should be more character development elements, mopre
weapons, a grater variety of weapons and Items. Other than that, Primo!
Overall 9 out of 10
A great game! Great graphics, sound, and a wonderful challenge make this
an A game!
