Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Reviewed by Spencer Cargill Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is, in my opinion, the very best Game Boy game on the shelves. This game has it all. Wonderful game play, nice graphics, and fun worlds send it soaring to the top. Wario, one of Mario's endless foes, has seized Mario's castle while our hero was off saving Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land. 6 Golden Coins are required to open the now dark castles gates, and Wario has hidden them throughout the surrounding lands, putting them in possession of now evil bosses, guarded by everything from ants to bullets. Mario must venture through each world, collecting all 6 of the Golden Coins before he can at last confront Wario and take his castle back from the clutches of evil!

Graphics 9.2 out of 10

Graphics for this game are awesome: some of the best ever displayed on a Game Boy screen. The three-dimensional look of the game's characters and enemies give it a nice feel. Backgrounds don't repeat often, and each enemy and setting set the mood entirely for their respective world. There are tons of enemies and bosses, each unique in shape and size. This makes them very fun to knock off the screen with any of Mario's many attacks. Wonderful! A 9.2 out of 10 for this game's graphics!

Music and Sound 8.5 out of 10

The music and sound in this game are great. You'll be humming the tunes in your head for weeks. Each level's music is perfectly set for its level. Creepy, strange notes are played in a spooky world of ghosts and goblins, while modern, future-type music is played for the space world, as Mario leaps craters and dodges stars. You will be pulled into the game by this title's music and sounds, and you won't want to put it down. Every world is truly a fun experience with the sound Nintendo has crammed into this game pak. The only element holding it back is the sometimes annoying beeping nature of a few of the game's worlds. This game truly deserves its 8.5 out of 10 as far as sound and music go.

Game Challenge 9.1 out of 10

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is another one of those multi-skill level games that provides a non-frustrating, yet challenging play. Pressing the Select button at the screen for game selection puts the game in Easy Mode. This mode allows players to pass tougher levels if they choose, such as the Space Zone. (This world took me hours to finish. A true challenge, even in Easy Mode!) Or, players who seek a tougher game can leave it on hard mode, to strain through each course, maintaining a perfect game over a long period of time until at last they approach Wario's castle. By that time, you'll want to bash Wario's face in so bad, you'll dodge Pihrana Plants and leap lava like never before to get a shot at that guy!

Game Play-Fun 9.9 out of 10

Amazing. This game delivers fun bosses, enemies, and worlds from all directions, creative ones, instead of the typical grass, snow, desert, etc. stuff most adventure games sport. You'll have fun with this game, that's for sure. The levels include a Turtle Zone, inside a large robotic turtle, where a whale and submarine lurk, along with a secret level accessed only by the clever players. An oversized, angry octopus guards this world, daring you to attempt to seize his coin. Another world is the Tree Zone. Here, you'll have to get past everything from tree frogs to marching ants to tree sap to make it to the top. If you make it that far, you must do battle with an angry crow before earning his coin. 4 other worlds include Macro Zone, Pumpkin Zone, Space Zone, and Mario Zone. While you conquer each world, you collect coins that allow you to go into a sort of Mario casino where you spend your coins gambling for lives and power-ups.

Frustration

Some frustration can be found in this game. Some worlds, in both modes, may seem impossible to conquer. My example in Space Zone is the final level, where players must guide Mario through narrow openings in star consolations while collecting power ups in a moving screen. This is extremely difficult, and after you conquer it, you'll only get to an alien boss who will zap you to a crisp. At the end of the game comes Wario's Castle. This level proves to break Nintendo's annoying habit of making the final levels impossible and then the game's final level a cinch. In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario's Castle is very hard, with moving platforms, tough enemies, and that ever-present lava. This frustrating level, though, is in a way a quenching level for many Nintendo's player's thirst for a truly worthy final level for its game.

Replayability 7.2 out of 10

This game can be replayed a few times, with its two modes and secret levels, but it is not one of the really varying games, where hundreds of secrets, dozens of routes, and other variations make it possible to replay a game over and over thousands of times. Even though this game doesn't have wonderful replayability, the game itself make up for part of this, since it is a reasonably long game.

Game Value 9.6 out of 10

This game is defiantly worth the price. You will search this game for everything in it, and truly value it far more than the money you'll have to fork down for it. For any serious Game Boy player, this is a must have for any price.

Overall 9.9 out of 10

Super Mario 2: 6 Golden Coins is a great games. Don't miss it, Nintendo fans: you'll be glad you didn't. This game alone makes Game Boy worthwhile. Trust me, you will not be disappointed in Mario's adventure to collect the 6 Golden Coins and claim his castle once and for all.
