Graphics: The graphics are pretty shameful. The Pokemon just
look a bit too lame and unexciting. They have almost no personality
behind them (almost all of them look too kiddy-like for my tastes)
and the regular graphics are poorly detailed, even for the GBC (check
out Lufia, DW1 & 2, DW 3, Any of the Wario games if you don't believe that).
Sound: The music is shameful. For a GBC game released in 97 or 98 the
sound quality is pretty bad and the music gets annoying after having to
listen to it for so long. Maybe they should have upgraded the sound when
they took it from Blue and Red. They should have worked on the battle
and boss music especially.
Gameplay: Another in the long list of Pokemon games. I've played every
one of them (I even imported them) and I've yet to see the appeal of them.
I'm glad that the craze is pretty much dead, though unfortunately they are
trying to bring it back. You play as a kid who goes out to battle monsters
by catching them with Pokeballs, leveling them up, then getting badges
after beating Gym Leaders to be able to go to new places. It's almost
exactly like Blue and Red (just like Crystal is almost exactly like Gold
and Silver) except for the fact that you have to keep a Pikachu (a yellow
electric pika) following you happy and they threw in Jesse and James.
It's pretty boring, but I gave it higher points for being one of the only
RPGs for the Gameboy.
Hardness factor: I had no problems playing this game. It's generally very
easy and the only time you really have to level up is in the beginning.
Any 5-year-old could figure out the 'strategy' aspect of this game in
that certain types are weaker or stronger than other types.
Overall: 4 out of 10. The only way I would recommend this game is if you
only have a Gameboy and are 6 years old. Try Lufia and the Dragon Warrior
games if you want really good RPGs.
