Overall: 5.5 out of 10
Graphics: The graphics were okay, though detail was high in some creatures
and low in other aspects of the game (like the map and most of the backgrounds).
They could have given Belmont an actual face though, though I guess you're
supposed to relate to him.
Sound: Music is okay. I bet it would sound better on the NES, but it just doesn't
really work on the Gameboy, especially this early in Gameboy game development.
The songs do sound nice, but their quality wasn't exactly great.
Gameplay: One of those games that gamers everywhere know of (or at least
some game of the series). This is the sequel to the classic sidescroller and
I think they did a better job on it than the first. They added the ability to
get and use items and they added the map in the beginning, though most of
the game is the same as the first (even some of the sprites look exactly
like they did in the predecessor). It's a fun game where you must battle
monsters and bosses while collecting upgrades for your whip and picking
up various hidden items that you can use. However, I really couldn't get past
how slow the character moves, which is extra important for big games like
this one.
Hardness factor: Your character can't jump at all, controls are unresponsive,
and your character is also slow. This combination makes the game much
harder than it should be.
Overall: 5.5 out of 10. This game is classic, but the controls are a little
intimidating. The game was much harder than it should have been.
Fortunately, the NES port is a little bit better, so I'd much rather recommend that.
