The best strategy is to take over a country that borders an easy
battlefield. Shinano, Kozuke, Totoumi, Mikawa, and to a lesser extent
North Shinano and Musashi. Aaron Vaughn's strategy of letting stronger
countries take of it is ok except for Oda who is the strongest lord in
the game. Trying to keep Oda down in the southwest corner is the best
way to keep him from taking over Japan I find it best to take out Hojo,
Uesugi, and/or Imagawa in the first stages of the game. Alliances
are generally useless I usually use the same money I would have used
for weapons namely rifles. My best advice is just get the rank up as
fast as possible, because the higher the rank the easier it is to take
down Oda and win the game.

When you go and take over a land, weaken their army every month or every
other month. Let the more powerful guys take it if they want to. Don't worry
you will get it back. Then slowly take over the more powerful guys countries
weaker countries after you build up your army some. After you take it over,
make an alliance with the original ruler of it for about 12 months. Continue
this tactic until you take over the original ruler. You might want to wait to
take over the emperor until the second heir takes his place as emperor. This
gives you a great military advantage. You want to take over the guy between
the two mountain regions as soon as possible. Also take over Hojo after his
heir takes over. And the best advice I can give you is to take as many countries
as you can before Shingen dies and Katsiotori takes over.
