To rename the main characters (Ryan and Alex) to a name that you like,
at the screen where you select one or two players, press A + B + Select
simultaneously.
Get lots of money

Spend your money on a Dragon Feet book, and max out your kick power.
Now go to the Sauna at the last town to fight Bonny & Clyde. You'll
waste them in one hit each, and make around $7.50 per kill! Leave the
screen and reenter, and repeat the process. If they somehow get a hit
off you, enter the sauna, and use some of the money to restore some
of that lost stamina.

Twins (second to last boss)???? That's right, it is the theme on the
title screen of Double Dragon!!! (or in the vs. mode of the same game,
I forgot which).

Go to the Armstrong Thru-Way Tunnel. position your character under
the fourth light from the left and press up on the control pad. A door
to Merlin's Mystery shop will appear.

You can save your girlfriend without beating the game. On the floor
where you fight the twins push up on 1 of the doors and you'll go in it.
She says thanks (note: the ending is the same). Also, the best place to
make money is were you fight the two bosses in purple (either time),
just dragon kick one to death and the other will stand still until you
hit him. Dragon feet and grand slam are the most important books. The
magic shop is in a hidden door in the tunnel. Last, the most efficient
way to max stats is eating various candy bars, the best food to take
with you is karma jolt medicine, and the best place to heal is the sauna.
