Popularity
Some good ways to raise your popularity are: returning the missing
library book, rescuing the kitten, stopping the dog from chasing the cat
and rescuing the girl from the burning building (you will lose about 2
health points doing this). Of course beating up bad guys and crime
bosses always raises your popularity too.
The missing library book is actually the `Egyptian Book of the Dead'
which you can buy at the bookstore. Simply take it to the library and
use it on the librarian.
To rescue the kitten you need the ladder and catnip. The ladder is found
in the screen below the museum, the catnip is found in the park to the
left of the museum (it's on a bush close to the bright spot - use your
examine key to find it). Once you have these things, stand under the
kitten and operate the ladder. Use the catnip on the kitten and pick up
the kitten.
To stop the dog from chasing the cat at the bookstore, use the skeleton
bone on the dog.
Another fun way to raise your popularity is go into the museum and watch
the guy constructing the dinosaur. When he's done, pick up a bone from
the dinosaur. It will fall apart and you will lose 1 popularity point
(so its best to do this early when you have no popularity points). Now
operate the bones and watch what happens.
Domes and Mystical Objects
There are 4 mystical objects from which Sutekh draws his power. All 4 of
them must be domed before ANY crime boss is defeated. Otherwise, one
undomed mystical object disappears for each defeated crime boss and you
must fight the crime boss again once you are in Sutekh's hideout. The 4
mystical objects are the Scroll, Crown, Statue and Diamond.
The 4 domes are located in Vortex's hideout. To reach his hideout walk
down from the back of the Pyramid Club to an old ruin area set in a
purple background with a car and a phone booth. Operate the phone booth
and then the phone. Vortex will only let you in if your popularity has
reached the blue zone.
The Scroll is located in the library behind a secret passage way. Once
in the library, examine the closest shelf of books - you will be told
that one looks different. Operate the `book' (as opposed to `books')
and a door will open. You will see the Scroll when you pass through the
door. There is another secret passage way in this Scroll room which is
accessed in the same manner. Obtain the book of Egyptology from this
second secret room.
The Crown is located in the vault to the right of the library and can
only be seen if you operate the bricks which look different. There is a
catch however, these are exploding bricks and you will die unless you
deactivate them first. Movement of the electrified torch deactivates the
bricks but you will lose a significant amount of health unless you use
the force gloves on the torch. The force gloves are obtained by
operating a brick with a `V' on the far left of Al's Grocery Store.
The Statue is located at the far right end of the Gallery. To reach the
Statue you must defeat two spinning statues. The only way to defeat
these guys is to punch them while they are spinning. As they are coming
towards you, jump over them but land close enough so that as they turn
around to face you, you can land a punch - then quickly jump out of the
way. You only need to do this about 3 times before they crumble.
The Diamond is located in the museum and is guarded by a Mummy. As soon
as you try to dome or operate the Diamond, the Mummy will fight you.
There are two ways to defeat this guy - one shot from the Staff of Ra,
or 3 quick punches in the back (the third being an uppercut). If you
attempt to punch him, I suggest using a controller with a turbo button.
Scarabs and Crime Bosses
You need to collect all 5 scarabs in order to reach Sutekh. The first is
found on the way out of the sewer (in the candle room) at the start of
the game. The other 4 are obtained from the crime bosses when you defeat
them. All 5 must be placed in the headstone in the cemetery.
The Ninja boss is located in the restaurant below the Professor's house.
Keep walking to the left and ignore the warnings of the waitress. The
best way to beat Ninjas is to pin them to a wall, stand on top of them
and continually punch them so that they cannot recover. All Ninjas,
including the boss, are weakened if you have the Urn. Obtain this at the
dress shop by operating the right curtain. You will have to fight a
regular strength Ninja but if you beat her and operate the curtain again
you can pick up the Urn.
The English boss is located in the ground floor of the Pyramid Club. You
must enter through the kitchen by buying 3 packages of nuts from the
cook to the left of the front of the Pyramid Club. Once you have bought
the nuts, go up through the gate behind the cook to the next screen,
over about 3 steps and down into the kitchen. Once you're in the club,
defeat the bad guys (keep low and punch), operate the right horn of the
moose and go through the secret passage. The English boss is rather
difficult to beat. You have to punch him while avoiding his twirling
night stick. If he flicks his night stick up, a piece of the ceiling
will fall so watch for this move and jump out of the way.
The Rat boss is located in the sewers. Before you attempt this guy
obtain the whistle and the amulet. It also helps to have a lot of money
(defeat the Ninja who is beating up the old man in front of Curios and
he will give you money). The whistle is located at the screen to the
right of the place where you found the ladder (examine the sign on the
lamppost and follow the directions). Obtain the amulet by feeding the
squirrel on the right at the library. When you do this, both squirrels
will run away and return with a small object which they leave by the
door. This is the amulet - pick it up. To get to the Rat boss, keep
going down from the grocery store, past the two big pipes and operate
the manhole. Once in the sewers, don't touch the first valve (it
increases the rate at which steam is expelled). Keep walking to the
right, past the two mice until you come to a screen with a manhole
and a puddle of water. Quickly walk around the manhole, examine the
puddle and pick up the crank. Walk to the right and fight the rat (get
close, punch and jump to avoid his spit). With him out of the way use
the crowbar on the pipe to the right and operate the lever. Walk back
to the manhole and operate it. Go left, jump over the water and head
down. In the screen to the right is a pizza delivery man. If you have
$10 you can buy his pizza and eat it (operate food) to restore your
life. Walk left until you come to a screen with 2 bats. Operate the
whistle to get rid of the bats. Continue to the left and through the
doorway until you reach a screen with a box and steam and water
pouring out. You have to use the crowbar on the box, then use the
crank on the hole and go down the ladder. The steam and water come at
regular intervals so time your moves. At the bottom of the ladder go
right until you come to another manhole guarded by another rat. Defeat
this guy and operate the manhole. At the bottom is the Rat boss so be
sure you are healthy before you go down. The Rat boss is fairly easy
to beat. Jump to get in close and punch. Watch out for his tail.
Goliath, the bouncer boss, is located on the top floor of the Pyramid
Club. Go to the back of the Pyramid Club and an elevator should come
down on the right side. Jump on this elevator and it will take you up.
When it stops, jump off. Use the screw driver on the box and operate
the lever to disable the guns. Walk left to the edge of the ledge and
go around the corner by pressing UP. Continue walking around the ledge
in this way until you come to a ladder - go up. Use the crowbar on the
vent and operate the vent. You will fall in on Goliath. Goliath is the
most interesting of all the bosses to fight. To beat him you have to get
him to chase you and at the last second jump out of the way causing him
to crash into the wall. He will see stars for a few seconds during which
time you can kick him (punching does not seem to hurt him). You can only
get a few kicks in before he recovers and starts fighting again so get
you're kick in and jump out of the way. Keep doing this until he's dead.
Staff of Ra
The Staff of Ra is actually in two pieces and must be assembled. The
shaft is located at the Professor's house to the left of the burning
building. You have to have maximum popularity before the Professor will
let you in. There is a fake Staff of Ra in Curio's - ignore it.
The head-piece is hidden in the wall in the screen to the left of the
entrance to the graveyard. You need the book on Egyptology to read the
writing on the wall and then you must talk to the cat. The head-piece
should appear in the wall - pick it up. Put the two together with the
Use command.
Surprisingly, the Staff of Ra is not actually used against Sutekh. It
only has 8 shots and is best used against the Mummies which are summoned
by Sutekh during the final fight. To fire it the press UP + A. The
manual says UP + B which is incorrect.
Sutekh
To reach Sutekh's hideout, you must go into the graveyard, walk left to
the headstone and place the 5 scarabs into the headstone. A small
passage will open which you can crawl through. Once in, keep walking
right until you get to Sutekh. If all 4 mystical object were
successfully domed, you can proceed safely to Sutekh. If not, you will
meet a crime boss for every undomed mystical object which you must
defeat before you can continue.
The best way to beat Sutekh is to stay low in the center of the screen
and punch like crazy (turbo really helps here). Sutekh will suddenly
disappear and then reappear in a different place but if you are near the
center, most of the time you will be able to reach him simply by turning
around. Keeping low helps to avoid his attack.
If you're going to beat Sutekh you have to be good at fighting the
Statues and the Mummy (although the Mummy is easily disposed of by the
Staff of Ra). Sutekh will periodically disappear during the fight
sequence and be replaced by the Statues or Mummy.
Death Traps
When Nightshade's health reaches 0, he falls through the floor and is
placed, by Sutekh, into a death trap. Several of these traps can be
escaped from but the last one, the freeze ray cannot. If Nightshade
escapes, his heath is restored and the game continues. If not, the game
is over.
To escape the conveyor belt, allow Nightshade to advance until his foot
is almost touching the straight lever on the left. At this point,
operate the lever. If you try to operate the lever on the right, the
conveyor belt will speed up and Nightshade will die.
To escape the compressing wall, pick up the 4th and 2nd pipes from the
left. Put the pipes together with the Use command.
To escape the dog, move the chair over to the exposed metal on the far
left of the screen and operate the metal. Quickly jump over the gap in
the floor and go to the lever. Let the gap in the floor expand until the
piece that Nightshade is standing on has moved one increment to the
right of the door below him and operate the lever to open the door.
While the dog is running away from the door, fall down to dog level and
go out the door. You have to be fast.
To escape the weight, use food on the Rat. If you don't have any food
you can't escape.
Restoring Health
You can restore Nightshade's health by eating (operate food), by
operating the healing booth in Vortex's hideout (you can only do this 4
times) or by operating the first-aid-kit obtained by operating the brick
with a `V' on it in the wall behind the cook. Also every time you escape
a death trap Nightshade's health is restored.
